How does a woman remain whole and balanced in the midst of the demands of her life and relationships? The central question Anne Morrow Lindbergh posed in Gift from the Sea resonated with Kim Jocelyn Dickson, whose initial introduction to the author occurred when she read her grandmother's 1955 first edition copy one summer vacation between semesters at Princeton Theological Seminary. Intrigued by the beauty and wisdom of Lindbergh's writing, Dickson launched a search for the balance of her work, which was then largely out of print. Of all Lindbergh's writings, five volumes of published diaries and letters rose to the top and captured Dickson's attention. In them she discovered a fascinating record of Lindbergh's life married to an American icon, set against some of the most important events of the twentieth-century that included her own participation as an aviation pioneer and best-selling author. But the main attraction for Dickson was the compelling inner life of the author. Despite her giftedness, privilege, and accomplishments, Lindbergh wrestled with self-doubt and gave voice to the struggle many of us face, which is the courage to believe in ourselves and live boldly out of that. In Gifts from the Spirit, Dickson mines the gems of insight from Lindbergh's diaries and letters and, in sharing their relevance to her life, encourages us to understand our own. Wisdom on love, friendship, loss, passion, and parenthood are just a few of the themes touched on in entries such as "The Pilot, the Poet, and their Passion," "The Must of Mutuality," "Embracing Grief as a Path to Peace," "How Intimacy is Possible," and "Our Legacy to our Children." Readers who value reflection and seek to cultivate awareness of their inner lives are sure to find inspiration here. Those familiar with Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Gift from the Sea will find their understanding deepened, and readers unfamiliar with her will be delighted in their discovery.

Karimah, a charming, headstrong Jewish teenager in 11th Century Egypt, follows her heart to live a life of adventure; as a brigand targeting desert caravans and as a pirate on the high seas. Rabbi Nissim, writing from North Africa, comforts Karimah's father with tales from classical rabbinic literature. The book is presented as a series of ?found? Cairo Genizah (old book depository) documents. Writing home to her brother, Karimah quotes not only from traditional Jewish texts, but also from the Arabian Nights. Although unpredictable, Karimah is nevertheless guided by her own steadfast ideas of honor and tradition. A DELIGHTFUL COMPENDIUM OF CONSOLATION is historically accurate. With this book, Rabbi Visotzky, professor of midrash, proves to be not only a master teacher, but a master storyteller, as well.

Tracing the notion of 'the gift' in Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Emilio Corriero provides a new interpretation of this essential text, alongside 'the gift's' evolution as a key concept in the history of western philosophy and Christianity. The last phase of Nietzsche's thought, including his writings on the death of God, The Will to Power, the Overman, and eternal recurrence are analysed anew in Corriero's reading of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. From Nietzsche's Prologue, in which Zarathustra presents the idea of the Overman as a gift of love and wisdom, up to the fourth and final book, in which the theme of hospitality and sacrifice are inextricably linked to the concept of donation, highlighting the novelty and exceptionality of Zarathustra's gift. Building on these ideas, this book reveals how the gift of Zarathustra put forward by Nietzsche rethinks the relationships between individuals based on Christian doctrine, enabling new forms of coexistence and sociality to thrive.

Book summary The Wisdom of the Trees is really two sides of a coin in its intent. It was inspired by an experience that I had while helping some friends make maple syrup. They had a magnificent maple forest and invited my husband and I to help them tap the trees. Since Im an avid maple syrup lover and had been curious about the actual process of taking it from the trees through its transformation into something so delicious and precious that it has become costly to buy, I was excited to join in the fun and learn about the process too. Because my experience with the trees during this tapping was so mind boggling to me, I wanted to share it with children while they are young enough to incorporate a deeper appreciation of nature and gratitude for what nature provides into their viewpoints. The sharing came out in the form of a childrens fiction story based on my actual experience. In the story, my main character is a young, pre-teen aged boy named Ryan. His family, including a younger sister and several pets, has just moved from a city life into the country, and Ryan is not doing well. His unhappiness with the move affects everyone around him, with his parents worrying that they have made a mistake in thinking the move would be good for all of them. To make matters worse for Ryan, his sister is blissfully happy, while he mopes about wishing he were back with his friends and at his old school. The crux of the story occurs when the family decides on an outing to help out at a maple tree farm, and Ryan reluctantly accompanies them. During their time on the farm, surprising events occur that result in a powerful shift in Ryans attitude, transforming his outlook and giving him a new sense of purpose. Since the experience itself was real, the liberties I took were in creating a character who reflected me at that age and what I wished might have happened to me.
