#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In the late summer of a long-ago year, Alton Turner Blackwood brutally murdered four families. His savage spree ended only when he himself was killed by the last survivor of the last family, a fourteen-year-old boy. Half a continent away and two decades later, someone is murdering families again, re-creating in detail Blackwood’s crimes. Homicide detective John Calvino is certain that his own family—his wife and three children—will be targets, just as his parents and sisters were victims on that distant night when he was fourteen and killed their slayer. As a detective, John is a man of reason who deals in cold facts. But an extraordinary experience convinces him that sometimes death is not a one-way journey, that sometimes the dead return. Includes the bonus novella Darkness Under the Sun and an excerpt from Dean Koontz's The City!

We are often afraid of the things we cannot see - but I am here to take you on my personal journey of seeing my unseen. The Night Knows Your Name is a collection of poetry I started writing in conjunction with my therapy. It served as a great means of externalising and exploring the themes of heartbreak, despair, anger, confusion through my early days of recovery. I was also able to relive my joy, and cement little pieces of wisdom I discovered along the way. These pieces inevitably paved a clearer road for my journey inward to clearer sight of who I really am, which has now led me to you. I have sectioned the book according to emotional themes: Ghost Love, Sorrow, Anguish, Healing, Way, Fire, and Home - and you can read it in that order as a journey to the light, or pick a poem from a chapter that your heart yearns to read from; some can serve as prayers, which you can recite as mantras, which you can meditate upon whenever you are idle. Wherever you are on your journey, I hope you honour it, and whichever way you choose to read this book, I hope you will begin to learn your name in the night, just as I have begun to learn mine.

In the summer of 1903, just before he turned twenty-four, Wallace Stevens joined a six-week hunting expedition to the wilderness of British Columbia. The adventure profoundly influenced his conceptions of language and silence, his symbolic geography, and his sensibilities toward wild nature as nonhuman “other.” The rugged western mountains came to represent that promontory of experience—“green's green apogee”—against which Stevens would measure the reality of all his later perceptions and conceptions and by which he would judge the purpose and value of works of the human imagination. Notations of the Wild views his poetry as a radical reimagining of the nature/culture dialectic and a reinstatement of its forgotten term—Nature. Gyorgyi Voros focuses on three governing metaphors in Stevens' poems—Nature as house, Nature as body, and Nature as self. She argues that Stevens' youthful wilderness experience yielded his primary subject—the relationship between human beings and nonhuman nature—and that it spurred his shift from a romantic to a phenomenological understanding of nature. Most important, it prompted him to reject his culture's narrow humanism in favor of a singular vision that in today's terms would he deemed ecological.

Piper Hecht's first and greatest secret is that he knows how to kill gods. What's not a secret is that he knows how to win wars. Hecht's secrets make him dangerous, but his skill and his reputation put him in danger—from his enemies, who fear what he might do or who want revenge for what he has already done; and from his friends, who want to use his military gifts for their own purposes. His sister Heris and his living ancestor Cloven Februaren, the Ninth Unknown, have made Hecht part of their fight against the return of the dark god, Kharoulke the Windwalker. At the same time, the half-mad Empress Katrin wants Hecht to lead the armies of the Grail Empire eastward on a crusade against his old co-religionists the Praman. Meanwhile, the world is changing. The winters are growing longer and harsher every year, and the seas are getting shallower. The far north and the high mountain ranges are going under the ice, fast. The Wells of Power are getting weaker, and the old evils, the Instrumentalities from the Time Before Time, have begun to ooze back into the world. Surrender to the Will of the Night is the third book in Glen Cook's phenomenal Instrumentalities of the Night fantasy series. As ever, the genius of Glen Cook's storytelling lies in his common touch: in soldiers, who are like real soldiers; in men and women, who love and laugh and sweat, with real hopes and real fears, united only in their determination to face the oncoming night.
