- Digitally restored illustrations- Translated captions- AnnotatedThough few of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings give explicit mention of the sky in their names, a close observation of the master's skyscapes demonstrates a clear progression from the simple, more naturalistically portrayed skies of the early 1880s to the characteristically swirling, pulsating heavens of his late work, especially from 1887 to Van Gogh's death in 1890. In some of his finest masterpieces, the juxtaposition between dark blue and brilliant yellow is striking. Watch especially for yellow or yellow tones and their expressive power in these online reproductions of the sky as processed and presented through Van Gogh's mind and brush.Don't be fooled by the titles below: these paintings present masterful skies in addition to (literally above and beyond) other earthbound features. Here are 50 of Van Gogh's finest skyscapes in a digitally restored state: their eye-popping brilliance and vitality are just as on the day Vincent Van Gogh finished them. Eleven papers extend discussion of the role and importance of the landscape and the wider environment to past societies, and to the understanding and interpretation of their material remains, into consideration of the significance of the celestial environment: the skyscape. The role of the sky for past societies has been relegated to the fringes of archaeological discourse. Nevertheless archaeoastronomy has developed a new rigour in the last few decades and the evidence suggests that it can provide insights into the beliefs, practices and cosmologies of past societies. Skyscapes explores the current role of archaeoastronomical knowledge in archaeological discourse and how to integrate the two. It shows how it is not only possible but even desirable to look at the skyscape to shed further light on human societies. This is achieved by first exploring the historical relationship between archaeoastronomy and academia in general, and with archaeology in particular. The volume continues by presenting case-studies that either demonstrate how archaeoastronomical methodologies can add to our current understanding of past societies, their structures and beliefs, or how integrated approaches can raise new questions and even revolutionise current views of the past.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The definitive biography for decades to come.”—Leo Jansen, curator, the Van Gogh Museum, and co-editor of Vincent van Gogh: The Complete Letters Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, who galvanized readers with their Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of Jackson Pollock, have written another tour de force—an exquisitely detailed, compellingly readable portrait of Vincent van Gogh. Working with the full cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Naifeh and Smith have accessed a wealth of previously untapped materials to bring a crucial understanding to the larger-than-life mythology of this great artist: his early struggles to find his place in the world; his intense relationship with his brother Theo; and his move to Provence, where he painted some of the best-loved works in Western art. The authors also shed new light on many unexplored aspects of Van Gogh’s inner world: his erratic and tumultuous romantic life; his bouts of depression and mental illness; and the cloudy circumstances surrounding his death at the age of thirty-seven. Though countless books have been written about Van Gogh, no serious, ambitious examination of his life has been attempted in more than seventy years. Naifeh and Smith have re-created Van Gogh’s life with an astounding vividness and psychological acuity that bring a completely new and sympathetic understanding to this unique artistic genius. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • The Washington Post • The Wall Street Journal • San Francisco Chronicle • NPR • The Economist • Newsday • BookReporter “In their magisterial new biography, Van Gogh: The Life, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith provide a guided tour through the personal world and work of that Dutch painter, shining a bright light on the evolution of his art. . . . What [the authors] capture so powerfully is Van Gogh’s extraordinary will to learn, to persevere against the odds.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times “Brilliant . . . Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith are the big-game hunters of modern art history. . . . [Van Gogh] rushes along on a tide of research. . . . At once a model of scholarship and an emotive, pacy chunk of hagiography.”—Martin Herbert, The Daily Telegraph (London)

The Ministry of Vincent Van Gogh in Religion and Art surveys the historical venues where Van Gogh's life and work unfolded--Aldersgate, England, Amsterdam, Au Borinage, Antwerp, Asnieres-sur-Seine, Arles, Auvers-sur-Oise--culminating in an assessment of his legacy. Arguing that he is a painter-evangelist, a man of authentic religious calling, it demonstrates a novel thesis that theological spirituality is the genius of both his religious ministry and his art.

The great Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh comes to life in a new light on the pages of this splendid volume. Through eloquent poetic meditations on Van Gogh's late paintings, Marilyn Chandler McEntyre shows how these artworks testify to divine presence, and she invites readers to find their way through form, color, and light into a new awareness of the Spirit. Some of McEntyre's poems remind us of the sorrows in the life of this solitary artist and of his infinite longing. Some convey Van Gogh's epiphanies of joy and energy, expressing themselves in color. McEntyre sees the paintings as inviting us to see things in a different light, and her poetry is an act of consent to that invitation, providing an intimate encounter with these great works. Evocatively pairing art and poetry on two-page spreads, The Color of Light is McEntyre's third in a trilogy of poetry books on Dutch master painters, each of which invites us to reflect not only on the artist's life and faith but also on our own.
