John Fair and David Chapman tell the story of how film-makers use and manipulate the appearance and performances of muscular men and women to enhance the appeal of their productions. The authors show how this practice, deeply rooted in western epistemological traditions, evolved from the art of photography through magic lantern and stage shows into the motion picture industry, arguing that the sight of muscles in action induced a higher degree of viewer entertainment. From Eugen Sandow to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, muscular actors appear capable of performing the miraculous, and with the aid of stuntmen and filming contrivances, they do. By such means, muscles are used to perfect the art of illusion, inherent in movie-making from its earliest days.

The fifth in the ultrascreen series of eclectic anthologies examines the influence of Scorsese's upbringing in Little Italy on Mean Streets and Goodfellas; the urban madness of Taxi Driver and Bringing Out the Dead; the Catholic religiosity that permeates all the way from Mean Streets to the controversial interpretation of the Gospels in The Last Temptation of Christ. It also describes the devotion to US cinema that led the director to tackle the all-American musical in New York, New York, make a sequel to a classic in The Color of Money, and remake a pulp crime movie in Cape Fear. In its surprising wealth of interviews, essays and reviews, Martin Scorsese: A Journey through the American Psyche examines a filmmaker whose works offer little pieces of history reflected through the viewfinder, be it in the era-of-assassination backdrop of Taxi Driver or the bloody nineteenth-century canvas of Gangs of New York.

After thirty years filmmaking Scorsese is one of the few directors working in Hollywood whose movies still surprise and shock. He is still prepared to take risks and is still producing great movies. So what is it that makes Scorsese tick? What makes him take on a movie? How does he approach the script and decide the what he wants up there on the screen? The Untouchables television series was produced at the high point of the US film series drama in the early 1960s. The series featured the crusade of Federal agent Eliot Ness (played by Robert Stack) against the Prohibition era underworld of "Scarface" Al Capone. The long-running series featured early roles from a variety of screen personalities (such as Leslie Nielson, Peter Falk, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Leonard Nimoy, Robert Redford, and Robert Duvall) as well as established Hollywood players (Lee van Cleef, Lee Marvin, Patricia Neal, Barbara Stanwyck, and Dorothy Malone). The show set new standards for TV action and pioneered a more adventurous approach to the representation of violence on TV, which in turn provoked considerable controversy as well as acclaim. Tise Vahimagi details in this text the development of the "Gangster" genre and "The Untouchables'" relations to American cinema and television of the 1950s and 1960s, offering a sidelight onto the social and political event of the period. This book also includes illustrations and detailed credits providing a full production history for followers of of the series.
