This book is a compendium of material, in English and Irish, on the festival of Christmas from the manuscripts of the National Folklore Collection recalling how Christmas was celebrated in the nineteenth and early twentieth century in all its regional diversity. The book begins with accounts of the Christmas preparations, before moving through Christmas Eve, with its fasting, feasting and a multitude of superstitions, Christmas Day, with its focus on the home and family, and on to the accounts of the communal celebration of St Stephen's Day with Wren Boys, games and hunting. Moving towards New Year's Day, the book recalls the optimism and fear associated with a transitional time when omens for the coming year were keenly observed, and finally concludes with accounts of the Little Christmas, also known as the Women's Christmas, celebrated on 6 January, and at which point the twelve-day festival comes to a close.

Impreasin na Gaeilge / Impressions of the Irish language (2014) is a research book on the sound of the Irish language based on native voices of the Gael from the Gaeltacht itself. The book is based on empirical work by two authors from County Clare. An tAthair Seóirse Mac Clúin based Réilthíní Óir on the Irish of the Great Blasket Islands. Réilthíní Óir comprised the native Irish of Tomás Ó Criomhthain and the islanders of the Great Blasket Islands prior to 1922. The original title is revised in full with modern additions based on current native Irish (2007-2014). The language planning researcher is Seosamh Mac Ionnrachtaigh from Kilrush West Clare. Described as the prince of Irish historians by the great Belgian medievalist Paul Grosjean, SJ, Fr Paul Walsh (1885-1941) produced an astonishing body of original research and editorial work in various areas of Irish history and literature over a period of more than thirty years prior to his untimely death at the age of 56. His output included more than twenty books and some three hundred articles scattered through a variety of journals (many of them not now readily accessible). Some of these articles were collected and published posthumously in two volumes edited by his friend Colm Ã? Lochlainn, Irish Men of Learning (1947) and Irish Chiefs and Leaders (1960). A projected third volume never appeared. The present volume contains all of the articles that were to be included in that last volume, together with several additional items on a variety of historical topics. This collection of more than eighty articles includes many important and original contributions to Irish learning that have not been superseded by subsequent scholarly endeavor. Many of the insights they provide into the world of medieval Gaelic Ireland are still remarkably fresh and vivid. Making them available to a wider readership will, it is hoped, inspire further study in at least some of the areas covered. The volume has an introduction giving bibliographical details of the articles included and, as an appendix, a complete list of Paul Walsh's writings.
