Language is always changing. No one knows where it is going but the best way to future-cast is to look at the past. John Simpson animates for us a tradition of researching and editing, showing us both the technical lexicography needed to understand a word, and the careful poetry needed to construct its definition. He challenges both the idea that dictionaries are definitive, and the notion that language is falling apart. With a sense of humour, an ability to laugh at bureaucracy and an inclination to question the status quo, John Simpson gives life to the colourful characters at the OED and to the English language itself. He splices his stories with entertaining and erudite diversions into the history and origin of words such as 'kangaroo', 'hot-dog' , 'pommie', 'bicycle' , not ignoring those swearwords often classed as 'Anglo-Saxon' ! The book will speak to anyone who uses a dictionary, 'word people' , history lovers, students and parents.

Word Detectives Volume 2 is the second of three workbooks that make Latin roots accessible to elementary students through stories, movements, and pictures. Many programs start with prefixes and suffixes. In contrast, Word Detectives begins with the "meatiest" part of the word. Prefixes and suffixes modify words, but the roots are the essence. These roots can form a foundation for vocabulary and spelling. Each root is introduced using a simple story. This story is then associated with a body movement that reminds students of the meaning of the root. Finally, the root is associated with a picture that reminds the student of the story, the movement, and the meaning. There are 4 roots per lesson. The lessons are designed to be short and simple. Intensive worksheets combined with a scripted instructor's guide teach students to identify familiar roots when they encounter them in words. First students study a list of words with a common root using fine discrimination to differentiate between similar words, and then students learn to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words using gross discrimination based on the clues provided by the roots, prefixes, and suffixes. This book is meant to be a tool. If introduced early (between third and fifth grade), Latin roots can be highlighted in spelling, reading, and vocabulary, but it is never too late. The story-movement-image combination impacts multiple learning styles and makes high level skills attainable for younger students. Let's become "word detectives." Word Detectives Worksheets Volume 2 is an optional companion workbook. It eliminates the need to make copies and keeps student work organized. Instructors may prefer to purchase one Word Detectives Volume 2 Workbook which includes the stories, movements, pictures, worksheets, and scripted instruction guide. Instructors may choose to additionally purchase one Word Detectives Worksheets Volume 2 workbook which includes only the pictures, worksheets, and prefix/suffix appendixes for each student. Let's start looking for clues!
Why would a woman who runs a corner shop in South Manchester be shot dead in cold blood in apparently contract killing? Who could she have offended so much that they wanted her out of the way permanently? And what's happened to her partner? They're supposed to be inseperable but she hasn't been seen at all on the day of the killing and has disappeared. DSI Jeff Barton and his team, including newcomer Louisa Pilkington who joins as a civilian member but who holds a pretty big secret of her own, begin to unravel a complicated trail in pursuit of a killer who brings a touch of espionage and the Cold war into the investigation. More murders put the pressure on Jeff to find a way through and see what's really going on and apprehend a determined killer.

Words, Words, Words is all about the wonder of words. Drawing on a lifetime's experience, David Crystal explores language in all its rich varieties through words: the very building blocks of our communication. Language has no life of its own: it only exists in the mouths and ears, hands, eyes and brains of its users. As we are guided expertly and passionately through the mysteries and delights of word origins, histories, spellings, regional and social variations, taboo words, jargon, and wordplay, the contribution we all play in shaping the linguistic world around us becomes evident. Words, Words, Words is a celebration of what we say and how we say it. It invites us to engage linguistically with who we are: to understand what words tell us about where we come from and what we do. And as they continually shape our lives, it suggests ways that we can look at words anew and get involved with collecting and coining words ourselves.

Private detectives and detective agencies played a major role in American history from 1870 to 1940. Pinkerton, Burns, Thiels, and the smaller independents were a multi-million dollar industry, hired out by many if not most American corporations, who needed services of surveillance, strike breaking, and labor espionage. Not only is John Walton's account the first sustained history of this industry, it is also the first book to trace the ways in which the private detective came to occupy a cherished place in popular imagination. Walton paints lively portraits of these mythical figures from Sherlock Holmes, the brilliant eccentric, to Sam Spade, the hard-boiled hero of Dashiell Hammett's best-selling tales. There's a great question lurking in here: how did pulp magazine editors shape the image of the hard-boiled private eye, and what sorts of interplay obtained between the actual records (agency files, memoirs) of these motley individuals in real life and the legend of the private detective in mass-market fiction? This history of the private eyes and this account of how the detective industry and the culture industry played off of each other is a first. Walton show us, in clean clear outline, the figure of the classical private eye, and he shows us further how the memory of this iconic figure was sustained in fiction, radio, film, literary societies, product promotions, adolescent entertainments, and a subculture of detective enthusiasts.
