Winner of the Arthur Shapiro Award for the 2013 Best Book on Hypnosis "The charm and value of Reidís book is that it is very personal... Reidís persona emerges as a warm, generous, and enthusiastic colleague, who is eager to share how he figured this clinical hypnosis stuff out and integrated it into his practice... [The book] serves quite well to introduce the uninitiated, and those who wish to guide them, about using the power of trance and therapeutic communication in practical ways to become more effective in helping those for whom we care. I wish I had read it in medical school." -- Laurence I. Sugarman, M.D., F.A.A.P., A.B.M.H., Annals of Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education "This is an excellent introductory book for any professional who deals with behavioralhealth issues and would like to add hypnosis to her arsenal of clinical tools."--American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis Clinical hypnosis has been proven through decades of rigorous research and practice to be an effective intervention in a wide range of mental, behavioral, and physical health issues. This highly practical text demystifies clinical hypnosis by providing step-by-step guidance for using its techniques to enhance the repertoire of practitioners in other psychotherapeutic modalities. It offers mental health providers with no formal training in hypnosis the requisite guidance and information they need to learn and confidently apply strategies to help their clients initiate constructive, health-oriented change in their lives. Chapters progress from initial assessment through the development of treatment plans and actual hypnotic techniques with clients. The author shows how to apply hypnosis to such clinical issues as anxiety, stress, somatic disorders, pain, and unwanted habits. In addition, the author shows clinicians how they can broaden their practice beyond mental or physical health parameters of treatment by applying hypnosis in areas of personal growth and wellness (motivation, athletic performance, conflict resolution). The text also covers ethical and professional issues related to clinical hypnosis, which does not require special licensure when it is integrated into a psychotherapeutic practice. Key Features: Offers clinicians who have no or little background in clinical hypnosis clear, accessible information on how to safely and effectively use basic techniques with clients Helps psychotherapists expand their practice by providing effective interventions with behavioral health issues that are also eligible for insurance reimbursement Includes sample guided scripts for specific problems as well as experiential exercises and treatment plans Provides case histories drawn from the author's clinical work and those of the "father" of clinical hypnosis, Milton Erickson Instructs therapists on the use of hypnosis for clinical and personal growth and wellness issues

From early Jewish-Christian texts such as the Didache, which present well-defined catechetical programs, to contemporary authors such as Dallas Willard, who offer in-depth insights into the transformations of one's heart and soul, systematic texts on spiritual formation in the Western Christian tradition abound. These texts can offer ministers, researchers, and laypersons much clarity and guidance for their craft. However, the spiritual formation systems that we use are also always contextually influenced; such contextual factors may make them difficult to adapt to one's local work. Rather than turning to only a single text or community, then, it can be helpful for practitioners and theorists to look to a broader set of systematic presentations of spiritual formation. By turning to a group of specific individuals and communities in each era of Western Christian history, this book will help those working in this field to better understand how personal spiritual formation has been conceptualized and embodied. Such an exploration will help us not only to compile a more complete history of spiritual formation at the level of the individual but also to glean a better understanding of personal transformation so that we might engage this craft in more informed and systematic ways.

Using formal assessment instruments in counseling and psychotherapy is an efficient and systematic way to obtain information about clients and to subsequently tailor a counseling approach most likely to serve clients optimally. The more information a counselor obtains during the initial interview and first sessions, the more likely the client will be deeply understood by the counselor, which in turn increases the likelihood that an appropriate course of counseling will be taken, and ultimately leading to a more successful outcome. The Integral Intake is an idiographic, biographical, multidimensional assessment instrument based upon the Integral Psychology pioneered by Ken Wilber. From the perspective of Integral theory, comprehensive and holistic conceptualization of clients seeking counseling and psychotherapy includes knowledge of four distinct perspectives (quadrants) of each client: the client’s experience (the individual viewed subjectively/from within), the client’s behavior (the client viewed objectively/from without), the client’s culture (the client’s system viewed subjectively/from within), and the client’s social system (the client’s system viewed objectively/from without). The intake form is designed to provide the practitioner with a range of background information that can then be used to more quickly and effectively formulate a counseling/treatment approach. The assessment form and accompanying materials will be included on a companion CD, formatted to be printed and reproduced for use with each new client. The book will provide an overview of the Integral Psychology model, describe the development of the assessment form and its use, and provide general guidelines for the evaluation of responses and planning for an appropriate counseling approach. A series of case examples, based on actual completed intake forms, will provide insight into the use of the Integral Intake.

Gain a better understanding of the special therapeutic issues and needs of GLBT families In terms of research, GLBT families constitute a neglected segment of society. Gender and sexual orientation can make the issues in family studies even more difficult to work through. An Introduction to GLBT Family Studies tackles a challenging research topic by presenting noted experts examining the latest information on the newest type of family studies—GLBT families. This groundbreaking text explores a wide range of unique problems faced by nontraditional families, as well as issues common to traditional families that need to be approached with a GLBT perspective. Though homophobia and heterosexism constantly influence GLBT families, these factors do not necessarily overwhelm the dynamic of their basic family unit. Issues present in many traditional families are found when researching GLBT families. An Introduction to GLBT Family Studies spotlights the issues, research, and future trends that provide a foundation for the study of GLBT families. This breakthrough volume focuses not only on the obvious unique factors within GLBT families, but also on the elements encountered within families that are present regardless of sexual orientation and gender, such as physical and emotional abuse. Expert contributors present research findings on family pattern issues relating to parent-child relationships, child development, sibling relationships, family structure, intimate relationships, stepfamilies, alternative family structures, and extended family relationships. Each chapter is extensively referenced and offers possibilities for further research. An Introduction to GLBT Family Studies discusses family studies topics such as: the impact of the family of origin life course perspective transgender identity issues and the family when a spouse comes out as gay, lesbian, or bisexual a study of lesbian couples adapting genogram techniques in therapy research comparing siblings of different sexual orientations studies of patterns of responses to parental reactions to learning their offspring are gay, lesbian, or bisexual the polyamory structure to some gay men’s familial relationships same-sex marriages and legalized relationships gay male couples’ roles in today’s society the impact of heterosexism on working with same-sex relationships research on long-term lesbian couples An Introduction to GLBT Family Studies is a valuable reference for academic researchers in family studies, marriage and family therapy, social work, and counseling; educators, upper division undergraduate and graduate students; and anyone interested in better understanding GLBT family studies.
