The Starfish and the Spirit

The Starfish and the Spirit

The Starfish and the Spirit is about creating a culture where church leaders view themselves as curators of a community on mission, not the source of certainty for every question and project.

Leveraging the metaphor Ori Brafman popularized in his NYT best-selling book, The Starfish and the Spider, Rob Wegner, Lance Ford, and Alan Hirsch show why the distributed structures of starfish organizations are uniquely fit to the church. They can function without a rigid central authority, and their regenerative abilities make them nimbler in reacting to external forces. Seeding starfish networks inside today's churches will prepare the church of tomorrow to be agile while still maintaining the necessary accountability to be effective. Rather than advocating the adoption of a starfish structure in place of the hierarchy of the spider, Wegner, Ford, and Hirsch emphasize the advantages of adapting the structure and order inherent in a spider organization toward a hybrid model--either a Spiderfish approach (leaning toward centralization) or a Starder approach (leaning toward decentralization). The Starfish and the Spirit is about creating a culture where church leaders view themselves as curators of a community on mission, not the source of certainty for every question and project. It is about creating a team of humble leaders "in the middle" of the church, not at the top--leaders who naturally reproduce multiple generations of leaders, from the middle out on mission. Imagine a church led by a team whose gifts and talents are completely unleashed, enabling everyone to show up and step up with all they really are. The joy and vigor coming from the collective strength, intelligence, and skill in the community of leaders not only brings greater potency but better yields for your ministry as well. What would it be like to see this kind of healthy leadership reproduced into the second, third, and fourth generation, on multiple strands?

Following the booming popularity of titles such as Switch and Made to Stick, Ori Brafman reveals how organizations can drive growth and profits by allowing contained chaos and disruption the space to flourish, generating new ideas that trigger innovation. In The Chaos Imperative, Brafman shows how even the best and most efficient organizations, from Fortune 500 companies to today's US Army, benefit from allowing a little unstructured space and disruption into their planning and decision-making. Brafman's approach is a groundbreaking new way of managing company policy and making astute, inventive choices, and can be applied to any type of organization, be they small or infinitely powerful. In our economy's current state of flux, it is crucial that we take risks, think organically and allow a little freedom for improvement to take place, and The Chaos Imperative shows us how to do this with vigour, and in an accessible, practical manner.

Robert A. Orr lives a fulfilling life which began with his birth in Argentina, his boyhood and teenage years in Brazil, and his college education and pilot's training in Canada. He served as a trainer and pilot for seventeen years in Brazil and returned to Canada where he and his wife Adriana now live. With a passion, burden and commitment to address and meet the blatant need for authentic leadership and management training, Robert continues to teach and mentor Christian leaders and "leaders-in-the-making" around the world. Three of his objectives are: 1.Provide this resource material in many languages, 2.Make this resource tool widely available to Christian workers, missions, ministries and the Church, 3.Assist in meeting the crying need for a new, strong, youthful, motivated, energetic and visionary authentic managerial leadership characterized by godly principles and learned managerial skills. What a massive amount of research has gone into this very fine guide. I wish I could have had a copy of something like this 30 years ago! I trust that it is getting into the hands of a large number of leaders and managers in our Christian community who can certainly use the guidance and direction you supply. I was most pleased to note the number of times you quoted me and my writings in the manual. I'm complemented! I was pleased to note that it is being translated into other languages for leaders in other cultures. I trust that God will continue to use you and this type of training material to His glory for many years to come. (Dr. Ted W. Engstrom, President Emeritus, World Vision)

The Rebirth of Education

The Rebirth of Education

The problem is that schooling is not the same as learning. In The Rebirth of Education, Lant Pritchett uses two metaphors from nature to explain why.

Despite great progress around the world in getting more kids into schools, too many leave without even the most basic skills. In India's rural Andhra Pradesh, for instance, only about one in twenty children in fifth grade can perform basic arithmetic. The problem is that schooling is not the same as learning. In The Rebirth of Education, Lant Pritchett uses two metaphors from nature to explain why. The first draws on Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom's book about the difference between centralized and decentralized organizations, The Starfish and the Spider. Schools systems tend be centralized and suffer from the limitations inherent in top-down designs. The second metaphor is the concept of isomorphic mimicry. Pritchett argues that many developing countries superficially imitate systems that were successful in other nations— much as a nonpoisonous snake mimics the look of a poisonous one. Pritchett argues that the solution is to allow functional systems to evolve locally out of an environment pressured for success. Such an ecosystem needs to be open to variety and experimentation, locally operated, and flexibly financed. The only main cost is ceding control; the reward would be the rebirth of education suited for today's world.

We need a bold new brand of teacher leadership that will create opportunities for teachers to practice, share, and grow their knowledge and expertise. This book is about "teacherpreneurs"—highly accomplished classroom teachers who blur the lines of distinction between those who teach in schools and those who lead them. These teacherpreneurs embody the concept that teachers can teach as well as lead the transformation of teaching and learning. It’s about empowering expert teachers who can buoy the image of teaching and enforce standards among their ranks while all along making sure that their colleagues as well as education policymakers and the public know what works best for students. The book follows a small group of teacherpreneurs in their first year. We join their journey toward becoming teacher leaders whose work is not defined by administrative fiat, but by their knowledge of students and drive to influence policies that allow them and their colleagues to teach more effectively. The authors trace the teacherpreneurs' steps—and their own—in the effort to determine what it means to define and execute the concept of "teacherpreneurism" in the face of tough demands and resistant organizational structures.
