"Stained Glass in Catholic Philadelphia tells the remarkable story of the thousands of stained-glass windows - made in America, England, France, and Germany - in the more than 400 churches, chapels, and institutions of the five-county Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Since 1997 more than 450 sites have been visited to document the archdiocese's windows by photographing them. This process resulted in the creation of a photo archive of over 50,000 images. Using this archive as a foundation, a team of scholars - from a variety of institutions and with specialties in medieval studies, architectural and social history, Christian iconography, decorative and liturgical arts, the craft, creative reuse, and historic preservation of stained glass - was assembled to study these windows. The result is this profusely illustrated book of original research that makes accessible a significant and highly visible, but neglected, aspect of our ecclesial, national, and regional cultural heritage."--BOOK JACKET. By the end of the eighteenth century, classicism, which arose out of Europe's fascination with ancient Greece and Rome, had also left its mark on America. This study of the classical style in the fine and decorative arts shows the extent to which it influenced the material culture of Savannah, Georgia, from 1800 to 1840. More than 130 examples of objects owned in Savannah in this period are illustrated, described, and discussed. The objects include oil paintings and watercolors, clocks, musical instruments, jewelry, sculptures, engravings, bank notes, needlework, china, silver, brass, lighting fixtures, architectural elements, and furniture. Page Talbott presents an overview of the origins of classicism in Europe and its spread to America. Emphasizing Americans' close identification of classicism with national values and ideals, Talbott also discusses the style in the context of Savannah's social life and its history as a major southern port. She covers not only the principles, methods, and materials of classical design, but also the manufacture, distribution, sale, and ownership of a wide range of functional and decorative objects. Classical Savannah is the companion volume to the Classical Savannah exhibition, which opened in the spring of 1995 at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah. Illustrating well over half of the items in the exhibit, and including a detailed checklist of the additional seventy objects not shown in the book, Classical Savannah is a valuable source for historians, designers, decorators, collectors, and anyone interested in this period of America's history.

The present volume catalogues and illustrates all the stained glass produced before 1700 in the collections of Upstate New York. It includes the glass in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, in the Hyde Collection at Glen Falls, in Ithaca College, and predominantly in Corning, where the Corning Glass Museum is well known for its exceptional collection and where also Christ Episcopal Church houses two interesting fifteenth-century windows. The catalogue covers a wide range of panels of French and English glass from the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the collections are particularly strong in their holdings of later heraldic panels from the Lowlands and Switzerland. In addition to a detailed examination of the glass, Professor Meredith Parsons Lillich presents exhaustively researched histories of the individual panels, and sheds much light on the formation of the different collections and the personalities who created them. Every work catalogued is also illustrated, accompanied by clearly presented restoration charts and many comparative illustrations.
