For those at the high end of the trafficking chain, the sex trade is an alluring and lucrative business: the supply of girls is constant, the costs of operations are low, and interference from law enforcement is weak to non-existent. Anti-trafficking organizations and governments commonly appropriate such market metaphors of supply and demand as they struggle with the moral-political dimensions of a business involving trade, labor, prostitution, migration, and national borders. But how apt are they? Is the sex trade really the perfect business? This provocative new book examines the social worlds and interrelationships of traffickers, victims, and trafficking activists along the Thai-Lao border. It explores local efforts to reconcile international legal concepts, the bureaucratic prescriptions of aid organizations, and global development ideologies with on-the-ground realities of sexual commerce. Author Sverre Molland provides an insider’s view of recruitment and sex commerce gleaned from countless conversations and interviews in bars and brothels—a view that complicates popular stereotypes of women forced or duped into prostitution by organized crime. Molland’s fine-grained ethnography shows a much more varied picture of friends recruiting friends, and families helping relatives. A recruiter rationalizes her act as a benefit or favor to a village friend; relationships between prostitutes and bar owners are cloaked in kin terms and familial metaphors. Sex work in the Mekong region follows patron-client cultural scripts about mutual help and obligation, which makes distinguishing the victims from the traffickers difficult. Molland’s research illuminates the methods and motivations of recruiters as well as the economic incentives and predicaments of victims. The Perfect Business? is the first book to go beyond the usual focus on migrants and sex commerce to explore the institutional context of anti-trafficking. Its author, himself a former advisor for a United Nations anti-trafficking project, raises crucial questions about how an increasingly globalized development aid sector responds to what might more accurately be described as an extraterritorial development challenge of human mobility. His book will offer insights to students and scholars in anthropology, gender studies, and human geography, as well as anyone interested in one of the most controversial issues of development policy.

What’s YOUR story? In the hypercompetitive world of Silicon Valley, this question has replaced “What’s your pitch?” It’s another way of asking, “Who are you?” The art of the pitch is nothing short of a survival skill. If an entrepreneur can’t convince an investor in 10 minutes that a business idea has potential, that is often the end of it. If a project manager in a large enterprise can’t win support from other stakeholders, his or her project is at risk. You always need to be selling yourself, pitching your partners or your clients to work with you, or pitching what makes your new business an exciting and worthwhile investment. You may not realize it right now, but you do have a one-of-a-kind story to tell, one that makes you stand out from everyone else—a unique tale that makes you, your product, or your business unforgettable. In One Perfect Pitch, Marie Perruchet will help you discover it, hone it, and present it, so that you get buy-in from colleagues and potential investors. Learn: • How to mine the worst experiences of your life for your pitch • How to tell me, show me, and sign me up in one minute • How to make a good impression through any medium • The dos and don’ts of pitching etiquette—and how to correct common mistakes • The unspoken rules in Silicon Valley A former mentor at 500 Startups, where she was a pitching coach to world-changing companies at one of the largest incubators in the U.S., Perruchet shares her proven methodology, insider advice, and hands-on exercises. She provides a step-by-step framework that ensures you are pitch perfect whenever you need to sell an idea, a product, a business—or yourself. BUSINESS PLAN FOR A BUSINESS START UP Book Description The real value of creating a business plan is not in having the finished product in hand; rather, the value lies in the process of researching and thinking about your business in a systematic way. The act of planning helps you to think things through thoroughly, study and research if you are not sure of the facts, and look at your ideas critically. It takes time now, but avoids costly, perhaps disastrous, mistakes later. This business plan is a generic model suitable for all types of businesses. However, you should modify it to suit your particular circumstances. Before you begin, review the section titled Refining the Plan, found at the end. It suggests emphasizing certain areas depending upon your type of business (manufacturing, retail, service, etc.). It also has tips for fine-tuning your plan to make an effective presentation to investors or bankers. If this is why you're creating your plan, pay particular attention to your writing style. You will be judged by the quality and appearance of your work as well as by your ideas. It typically takes several weeks to complete a good plan. Most of that time is spent in research and re-thinking your ideas and assumptions. But then, that's the value of the process. So make time to do the job properly. Those who do never regret the effort. And finally, be sure to keep detailed notes on your sources of information and on the assumptions underlying your financial data. The only aspect that determines success in any business or even in your personal life is cooperation between your contribution and expected benefits. As you sow, so shall you reap. Assume that your contribution to a particular relationship is not giving what you expect or desire. After a while, you begin to reduce your participation in such a relationship or simply resist anything. That is what exactly happens with business stakeholders when they don’t receive what they want or fail to achieve their goals. There should be an explicit and equal balance between expectation and involvement to lessen resistance. This framework-based book emphasises the cooperation within stakeholders, which talks about benefit resistance and “Role and Goal Synergy”. Role and Goal Synergy is a check and balance approach to maintain benefits for every input of all participants. Additionally, this book provides structured viewpoints towards the “Customer Fragility Model”, which aids in designing the benchmark for customer management. At last, the assessment section includes almost 144 areas and activities to envisage the risk-optimised future of the business, which are the most operative keynotes to develop an efficient, sound and successful business. The theoretical framework gives four-dimensional visualisation to: > Learn about business and stakeholders with analogical reference of Perfect Box > Know more about the process of idea designing and improvement > Comprehend the risk of failure through the Cycle of Failure and Competition in Business > Understand the basis for a transparent evaluation of business ideas and decisions. Sound and More Successful Business Mission promotes different tools and methodologies through the website (www.perfectbox.org) to test ideas and review business from all the relevant angles. Brings to bear the author's extensive research and experience on the subject of acquisitions. Unlike so many discussions of the topic, it is practical, not theoretical; specific, not general. With chapters on business culture, finding the target, valuing the business, and structuring the deal, it covers all of the issues involved in acquisitions. In addition, the author considers common pitfalls in acquisitions, explaining why, for example, ``falling in love'' with a company too soon can lead to disaster. It is careful to emphasize the human side throughout, underscoring the fact that personnel, not machinery or inventory or capital shares, are the real assets in any takeover. With a majority of takeovers currently ending in failure, it is more important than ever and provides readers with essential advice for beating the odds.
