The Paracel Islands and South China Sea disputes require better understanding by U.S. policymakers in order to address the regions challenges. To attain that needed understanding, legal aspects of customary and modern laws are explored in this monograph to analyze the differences between competing maritime and territorial claims, and why and how China and Vietnam stake rival claims or maritime legal rights. Throughout, U.S. policies are examined through U.S. conflicted interests in the region. Recommendations for how the United States should engage these issues, a more appropriate task than trying to solve the disputes outright, are then offered.

China’s rise and stepped-up involvement in Southeast Asia have prompted a blend of anticipation and unease among its smaller neighbors. The stunning growth of China has yanked up the region’s economies, but its militarization of the South China Sea and dam building on the Mekong River has nations wary about Beijing’s outsized ambitions. Southeast Asians long felt relatively secure, relying on the United States as a security hedge, but that confidence began to slip after the Trump administration launched a trade war with China and questioned the usefulness of traditional alliances. This compelling book provides a snapshot of ten countries in Southeast Asia by exploring their diverse experiences with China and how this impacts their perceptions of Beijing’s actions and its long-term political, economic, military, and “soft power” goals in the region.

Japan and China share an age-old history of cultural, social, and economic interaction. In the last two decades links between the two giants of East Asia - especially economic links - have flourished. But behind the faade pressures are emerging. China's growing strength, Taiwan's desire for independence, and the reassertion of US strategic interests in the Asia Pacific region, contribute to these pressures, straining the fragile balance in Sino-Japanese relations. Memories of the Japanese occupation of China during the Second World War linger - an outward sign that for the relationship between China and Japan to flourish more than economically, new common ground has to be found politically. Japan and China: rivalry or cooperation in East Asia examines the foundations of the relationship, the pressures shaping it, its future, the difficulties between two powerful and independent neighbours and the impact of their relationship on the region and the world.
