The technical problems confronting different societies and periods, and the measures taken to solve them form the concern of this annual collection of essays. Volumes contain technical articles ranging widely in subject, time and region, as well as general papers on the history of technology. In addition to dealing with the history of technical discovery and change, History of Technology also explores the relations of technology to other aspects of life -- social, cultural and economic -- and shows how technological development has shaped, and been shaped by, the society in which it occurred.

The Scientific Intellectual

The Scientific Intellectual

Josephson's work is justly characterized as "the best biography in print" of Edison in The Papers of Thomas A. Edison: The Making of an Inventor, Vol.

In The Scientific Intellectual, Lewis S. Feuer traces the evolution of this new human type, seeking to define what ethic inspired him and the underlying emotions that created him. Under the influence of Max Weber the rise of the scientific spirit has been viewed by sociologists as an offspring of the Protestant revolution, with its asceticism and sense of guilt acting as causative agents in the rise of capitalism and the growth of the scientific movement. Feuer takes strong issue with this view, pointing out how it is at odds with what we know of the psychological conditions of modern societies making for human curiosity and its expression in the observation of and experiment with nature.

The definitive biography of the century's godfather of invention-from the preeminent Edison scholar "Israel's meticulous research and refusal to shy away from the dodgier aspects of Edison's personality offers a fresh glimpse into the life of the inventor."-New Scientist "Remarkable."-Nature "An authoritative look into Edison's working methods, here leavened by enough personal detail to give the achievements shape."-Publishers Weekly "Highly recommended." "Israel's book should go a long way toward taking Edison out of the shadows and placing him in the proper light."-Atlanta Journal-Constitution "Exhaustively researched, with strong emphasis on Edison's methods and achievements."-Kirkus Reviews The conventional story of Thomas Edison reads more like myth than history: With only three months of formal education, a hardworking young man overcomes the odds and becomes one of the greatest inventors in history. But the portrait that emerges from Edison: A Life of Invention reveals a man of genius and astonishing foresight whose career was actually a product of his fast-changing era. In this peerless biography, Paul Israel exposes for the first time the man behind the inventions, expertly situating his subject within a thoroughly realized portrait of a burgeoning country on the brink of massive change. Informed by Israel's unprecedented access to workshop diaries, notebooks, letters, and more than five million pages of archives, this definitive biography brings fresh insights to a singularly influential and triumphant career in science.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edmund Morris comes a revelatory new biography of Thomas Alva Edison, the most prolific genius in American history. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Time • Publishers Weekly • Kirkus Reviews Although Thomas Alva Edison was the most famous American of his time, and remains an international name today, he is mostly remembered only for the gift of universal electric light. His invention of the first practical incandescent lamp 140 years ago so dazzled the world—already reeling from his invention of the phonograph and dozens of other revolutionary devices—that it cast a shadow over his later achievements. In all, this near-deaf genius (“I haven’t heard a bird sing since I was twelve years old”) patented 1,093 inventions, not including others, such as the X-ray fluoroscope, that he left unlicensed for the benefit of medicine. One of the achievements of this staggering new biography, the first major life of Edison in more than twenty years, is that it portrays the unknown Edison—the philosopher, the futurist, the chemist, the botanist, the wartime defense adviser, the founder of nearly 250 companies—as fully as it deconstructs the Edison of mythological memory. Edmund Morris, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, brings to the task all the interpretive acuity and literary elegance that distinguished his previous biographies of Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and Ludwig van Beethoven. A trained musician, Morris is especially well equipped to recount Edison’s fifty-year obsession with recording technology and his pioneering advances in the synchronization of movies and sound. Morris sweeps aside conspiratorial theories positing an enmity between Edison and Nikola Tesla and presents proof of their mutually admiring, if wary, relationship. Enlightened by seven years of research among the five million pages of original documents preserved in Edison’s huge laboratory at West Orange, New Jersey, and privileged access to family papers still held in trust, Morris is also able to bring his subject to life on the page—the adored yet autocratic and often neglectful husband of two wives and father of six children. If the great man who emerges from it is less a sentimental hero than an overwhelming force of nature, driven onward by compulsive creativity, then Edison is at last getting his biographical due.

The things that engineers design are everywhere, and the influence that engineershave on daily life is far out of proportion to their numbers. In this expanded version of aremarkable essay published in Science more than a decade ago, Eugene Ferguson takes a probing lookat the process of engineering design, arguing that despite modern technical advances, goodengineering is still as much a matter of intuition and nonverbal thinking as of equations andcomputation.Ferguson, who has been successively a mechanical engineer, a technical museum curator, and a teacher of the history of technology, uses examples ranging from the development of theAmerican axe to the collapse of the Hartford Coliseum and the performance of the Hubble spacetelescope to illustrate the ways in which visual thinking enriches engineering and the ways in whichengineering that relies solely on technical sophistication can go wrong. He argues that a system ofengineering education that ignores this heritage of nonverbal thinking will produce engineers whoare dangerously ignorant of the many ways in which the real world differs from the mathematicalmodels constructed in academic minds. In Engineering and the Mind's Eye, Ferguson discusses thenature of engineering design and traces the development of visual and other nonverbal thinking, offering examples of how engineers and other technologists have used such strategies since theRenaissance. Accompanying these examples, and demonstrating the ways in which engineers have sharedtheir knowledge, is a parallel text of illustrations showing how visual thinking has been expressedover the past five centuries. Ferguson concludes his provocative account by arguing that engineeringeducation since 1945 has been skewed toward analytical techniques - which are easiest to teach andevaluate - and away from the art of engineering design as taught by experienced engineers.EugeneFerguson is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Delaware.

WISE, WITTY, AND RELENTLESSLY REAL STRAIGHT TALK FROM A RECOVERING ADDICT As Billy Manas can attest, getting sober is easy compared to living sober. But if he can do it, so can you, and he’s going to help you with nuts-and bolts suggestions for finding financial, personal, and emotional well-being to live your own version of a kickass life. Billy’s techniques for getting there are simple yet profound — tackling manageable goals, finding inspiration (in whatever way works for you), asking for help (even when you don’t want to), practicing gratitude and meditation (even if you think they’re silly), and steering clear of people who rain on your parade. Straightforward and doable, these strategies build confidence and build on each other until recovery means not just living but living better than ever.
