The notion of "magic" is a current popular culture phenomenon. Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings, the commercial glamour of the footballer and the pop idol surround us with their charisma, enchantment, and charm. But magic also exerts a terrifying political hold upon us: bin Laden's alleged March 28 e-mail message spoke of the attacks on America in form of "crushing its towers, disgracing its arrogance, undoing its magic." The nine scholars included in this volume consider the cultural power of magic, from early Christianity and the ancient Mediterranean to the curious film career of Buffalo Bill, focusing on topics such as Surrealism, France in the classical age, alchemy, and American fundamentalism, ranging from popular to elite magic, from theory to practice, from demonology to exoticism, from the magic of memory to the magic of the stage. As these essays show, magic defines the limit of both science and religion but as such remains indefinable.

A fantasy novel born out of real life tragedy, Maurpikios Fiddler: The True Meaning of Magic is set in a modern day fantasy world where two races of people exist- The magicals and the non-magicals. War and Conflict has plagued the two groups for centuries. Now both races find themselves facing a common enemy. In the Magical world childhood Scorpioma plagues the lives of their children, while in the non-magical world medical professionals have made great strides in discovering successful treatments for childhood cancers. Both sides realizing the two diseases are one in the same, forge The Treaty of Earthly Peace creating a bond that forces the two groups to come together and collaborate at Saint Juliana's Children's Research Institute. It is a race to save the lives of their children from the terrible twin diseases. Yet, there exists an old prophecy that gives the world a champion- young Maurpikios Fiddler. However, with every champion there is dark force to oppose his greatness. Radu Vrotsos a wealthy philanthropist and a maniacal wizard makes it no secret that he supports the bigotry and segregation of the old regime. Completely against the integration of the magicals and the non-magicals it is his hope to bring an end to the collaboration among the two groups. Maurpikios Fiddler will enter Saint Juliana's Children Research Institute a boy and in the end he will have no choice but to display the bravery of a man. This is a story of life, love, loyalty, family, friendship, and most of all faith in God. It is set in a world of fairies and angels, and all things magical. However, it is loosely based on the real life journey of an amazing eleven year old boy who discovered the True Meaning of Magic while going through cancer treatment.

Might Magic explores the place of monsters in the early modern imagination; the book is structured as a kind of journey, charting the translation, or migration of the monstrous from natural history to moral philosophy, from descriptions of creatures found in the external world, to the drama of human motivation, of sexual, political, and cultural identity. At its centre are readings of major works of French literature; from each of these focal stopping offpoints, a number of digressions lead us to better understand the issues and questions raised in each instance. Literature makes a particular kind of sense when studied in relation to what anthropologists call'thick descriptions' of context, and so I will be relating the questions and insights offered by literary writing to those produced by historians of religious conflict (this was a time of civil war and persistent rebellion), as of philosophy and science (this was also a time in which natural history and 'natural philosophy' underwent significant change). Charting a process of sustained and distinctive change, this book seeks to understand the cultural work performed by monsters inearly modern Europe - with a particular focus on France: monsters on stage as in the street; in the study as in the state, and the self.

The Odd Society: Book One An excerpt from Independent by Means of Magic: Some plans are best laid in secret “There may be no good time for such things,” Victoria’s father said. “I’m afraid I have terrible news, Victoria. It’s about your wedding.” “What’s happened, Father? I do hope Wilfred is well.” “My dear, that word can have many meanings,” he said, his mouth and eyebrows deepening into a scowl that lifted Victoria’s heart. “He is well finished with polite society. That means he’s well finished with any daughter of mine.” “Is there no hope?” her mother said, tears standing in her eyes. “No salvation?” “None. An inspector will likely be round to ask whether we have anything to contribute to the investigation. I told him we had no secrets of Mr. Abernathy’s or our own to keep. I am sorry, Victoria. Other suitable arrangements will be made, I can assure you of that.” “Yes, Father,” Victoria said, her voice and face reflecting her mother’s heartbreak perfectly. “I’ll speak to the inspector if it will help. I trust it will all work out for the best in the end.” Victoria stood, holding her napkin to her face, and walked quickly out of the room. “Shouldn’t have let him barter me off to the highest bidder, Mother,” she said under her breath. “And you should never have let him bring us back to this awful place.”
