St John of the Cross was a Carmelite friar and mystic who lived in Spain in the second half of the sixteenth century. He helped Teresa of Avila with her reform of the Carmelite Order and was imprisoned for political reasons. He wrote this beautiful poem on the love between the soul and God while in prison in Toledo. The work consists of the poem and a prose commentary on it. ‘Justly celebrated as a milestone in Spanish literature as well as a spiritual classic.’ (Baroness Cox, from the Introduction)

2014 Reprint of 1962 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In "Living Flame of Love" St. John of the Cross achieves the heights of his previous work and delves still further into the Divine mysteries of the soul's union with God. Because it was one of his last poems and the fruit of his more mature spirituality, "Living Flame" is written with greater eloquence and ardor than his earlier works and tells of a love more completely refined and of a soul which has experienced nearly perfect union with God. Written in four stanzas, with a commentary on each stanza, the poem begins by describing a soul which seeks a closer union with God. St. John then describes the journey. This is the standard translation by E. Allison Peers.

The Spiritual Canticle is one of St John's greatest works. Using the simple metaphor of the spouse and the bride, he sketches a series of dialogues between God and the soul, rihc in natural imagery. The fragrant vineyards, fruitful valleys and green hills, flocks of sheep and clear streams all speak of the Object of mystical love. The images of the basic Spiritual Canticle are so beautiful and its music so captivating that many who first heard it begged St John to write a commentary, together with its profound reflections on the relations of the soul to God, has become one of the world's richest sources of meditation. The commentary and the sublime poetry that inspired them form what is presented here as the complete Spiritual Canticle.
