As featured on the "Last Seen" podcast, the thrilling, definitive story of the $500m Gardner Museum art heist, full of "characters that would make Martin Scorsese swoon" (Boston Globe) In a secret meeting in 1981, a low-level Boston thief gave career gangster Ralph Rossetti the tip of a lifetime: the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was a big score waiting to happen. Though its collections included priceless artworks by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Degas, and others, its security was cheap, mismanaged, and out of date. And now, it seemed, the whole Boston criminal underworld knew it. Nearly a decade passed before the Museum museum was finally hit. But when it finally happened, the theft quickly became one of the most infamous art heists in history: thirteen works of art valued at up to 500 million, by some of the most famous artists in the world, were taken. The Boston FBI took control of the investigation, but twenty-five years later the case is still unsolved and the artwork is still missing. Stephen Kurkjian, one of the top investigative reporters in the country, has been working this case for over nearly twenty years. In Master Thieves, he sheds new light on some of the Gardner's most abiding mysteries. Why would someone steal these paintings, only to leave them hidden for twenty-five years? And why, if one of the top crime bosses in the city knew about this score in 1981, did the theft happen in 1990? What happened in those intervening years? And what might all this have to do with Boston's notorious gang wars of the 1980s? Kurkjian's reporting is already responsible for some of the biggest breaks in this story, including a meticulous reconstruction of what happened at the Museum museum that fateful night. Now Master Thieves will reveal the identities of those he believes plotted the heist, the motive for the crime, and the details that the FBI has refused to discuss. Taking you on a journey deep into the gangs of Boston, Kurkjian emerges with the most complete and compelling version of this story ever told.

For the first time in twenty-seven years, The Gardner Museum has authorized a book on the daring theft from the Museum of thirteen priceless works of art, including three Rembrandts and Vermeer's The Concert, together worth over $500 million. The Museum is offering $10 million for safe return of all the works; the heist remains the largest unsolved theft in history. In the early morning hours of March 18th, 1990, two thieves disguised as police officers talked their way into the museum, and tied up the night guards. They cut some of the paintings from their frames and stacked up others to take, leaving behind a priceless Rembrandt leaning against a chest. It is believed that the thieves "came for the Rembrandts"-- but they also stole works by Vermeer, Degas, Manet, and Flinck, as well as a Chinese beaker and a Napoleonic eagle finial. Eighty-one minutes later they were gone. In 1903, Isabella Stewart Gardner opened her extraordinary museum, modeled after a Venetian palazzo, for the "enjoyment and education of the public forever." She had amassed an impressive collection including some of the finest masterpieces by Rembrandt, Titian, Raphael, and Botticelli, as well as works by her contemporaries such as Sargent, Whistler, and Degas. The art works included paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, furniture, ceramics, glassware, books, manuscripts and ephemera--all but thirteen of which remain in place today. Stolen gives an inside look at the robbery and explores the impact of the missing works with commentary from the Museum's Director, Curators, and the Chief Investigator. They describe how the theft, often called a crime against humanity, has affected visitors and disrupted Isabella Stewart Gardner's careful arrangement of the works. The book is highly visual, with original photographs of the stolen objects, as well as how they originally looked placed in the galleries. Stolen, the only book on the theft commissioned by the Gardner Museum, provides the context to a brazen heist that left one of the world's great museums in search of its lost masterpieces.

"I couldn't put it down. Irreplaceable is a wonderful romp that will make a fantastic movie. Irreplaceable is irresistible!"-Cybill Shepherd."Charles Pinning has written a terrific novel about the responsibility of taking care of children, middle-age relationships, the great Gardner Museum heist, crooked politicians and exasperating art world people. It has fast-paced and yet evocative description, vivid characters, sharp and often very funny dialogue and a rich sense of New England places, especially Rhode Island, Boston and Massachusetts's North Shore. It would also make a hell of a movie."-Robert B. Whitcomb, Editor of the Editorial Pages, The Providence Journal.Things have a way of working out-just not the way we think they will.Swanson and Aleda are about to see each other for the first time in 34 years. She's coming to Providence, Rhode Island to fulfill a long-held dream of making a movie about the life of Victorian art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner, and he's worried about the shingles sliding off the roof...the worn runner going up the stairs...Raaah! But his genteel shabbiness will soon be the least of his worries. The night Aleda arrives, the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) Museum is robbed of important Degas pastels in a theft reminiscent of the unsolved 1990 theft of over $500 million in art from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Two days later, the RISD Museum director disappears and Swanson inherits her adopted children, a 13 year old boy, and a 10 year old girl.Believing there is a connection between the children's deceased mother who worked at the Gardner when it was robbed and the disappearance of their aunt, the RISD Museum director, Swanson is convinced he can solve the Gardner theft and consequently the RISD theft, thereby clarifying a muddy history, to say nothing of winning the Gardner's $5 million reward.Aleda has faith in Swanson, and together these unconventional sleuths fend off a maniacal DCYF case worker who wants to take the children away from Swanson, shoot a big-budget, studio movie and care for two young children. Providence, WaterFire, the Wheeler School and the Dirt Palace; Newport, the Chanler Hotel, the Cliff Walk and Rose Island; Fenway Park, the Gardner Museum and a terrifying buying spree at the Herms store on the Boston Public Garden sparkle and delight as Swanson and Aleda passionately pursue the stolen Gardner art and their own deferred dreams for love and a family. This brilliant and irreverent novel proves that it takes unconventional sleuths to solve an unconventional crime. All those interested in the Gardner heist will be enthralled. Meticulously researched and inventively constructed, this novel lays bare the moving force behind the theft in a story for lovers and lovers of art everywhere.

Unlock the cultural obsession with high-stakes robberies in Heist, a collection of the world’s greatest real-life break-ins. From the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s famous art heist to the disappearance of the Marie Antoinette watch, these 100% true stories will have you on the edge of your seat—and double checking the locks on your doors! Have you ever watched a movie like Ocean’s Eleven and thought: “There’s no way that could ever actually happen, right?” Wrong. In the US alone, there have been dozens, if not hundreds, of heists, from bank break-ins to museum plunders. In this premium compendium, we’ll walk through the most impressive ones, diving into the details behind each case, the detectives that led the investigations, how the events unfolded, and what mysteries remain. The hardcover book will explore the top 50 incidents, including: 1. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist: In March of 1990, two men dressed up as police officers and sweet-talked their way past security at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, MA. After tying up the real guards, these men dismantled and packed up 13 works of art, loaded them onto a truck, and drove off into the night, making the 81- minute breach one of the most expensive in modern history. Today, it remains the single largest property theft in the world. 2. The Great Train Robbery: Not all heists happen in buildings. In fact, one of the most popular ones was the 1963 train robbery in which nearly 2.6 million pounds was lifted from a Royal Mail train headed to London. Using intel provided by a man on the inside dubbed The Ulsterman, the group rigged the railways traffic light system to bring the train to an extended stop, during which time, they funneled the money from one of the carriages into a waiting truck by way of a human chain. 3. The French Bank Vault Tunnelers: On the morning of July 19, 1976, workers from a safe manufacturing company were called to the Société Générale bank to fix a faulty vault door that appeared to be jammed. When they drilled into the vault and peered in to diagnose the problem, though, what they found was not a loose screw or broken hinge, but a door that has been welded shut...from the inside. Also scattering the room was a couple of wine glasses, a portable stove, and a giant tunnel system that proved to be the method of transport for thieves, who had dug their way into the bank, spent the weekend there, and left with ten million in cash. 4. D. B. Cooper’s Escapades: The subject of many conspiracy theories, D. B. Cooper (not his real name) hopped on a Boeing 727 in a trench coat and sunglasses in 1971. When the plane had reached cruising altitude, Cooper hijacked it, extorting 200,000 dollars before strapping on a parachute, jumping out of the plane, and disappearing into thin air. This “aerial heist” remains unsolved to this day and remains one of the FBI’s most frustrating open cases. 5. The Botched Crown Jewels of England Theft: Back in 1671, a man named Thomas Blood (a cool name, by any standard) decided: “Eh, I’m gonna steal the Crown Jewels.” He reached out to Talbot Edwards, the keeper of the stones, with a proposition: if you give me a private viewing of the gemstones, I’ll have my nephew marry your daughter (a nephew who, naturally, turned out to not exist). At this private viewing, Blood knocked out Talbot, smashed the jewels into pieces and threw the shards into his pockets, hoping to make a run for it. Though he didn’t manage to escape, he did manage to escape jail time: The King at the time was so amused by this failed attempt that he let Blood off scot-free. And that’s just the start of it. Plastered with gorgeous photography and big, sleek pages, Heist looks as good as it is captivating. Crack the code of the world’s most elusive capers, from the popular tales your great grandad told you about to the ones that have been long forgotten.

A real who-dunit in the City of Boston. Was it a serious lapse in judgment or was it intentional? In truth, it matters not. What does matter is that a solitary act by a college student, babysitting Millions of Dollars' worth of art, in the early morning hours of March 18, 1990, resulted in the theft of thirteen priceless works from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. With the push of a button, the Museum in the Fens lost part of its soul when it was piundered by ruthless thieves.Theories swirl even today, about who was behind it and why the paintings haven't been found. Countless people have written on the subject and yet over twenty years later, still no answers. Until now. Artful Deception is unlike anything else ever written about the heist. It is told from a unique perspective in that it focuses on a crime alliance that purposely seeks no limelight, notiriety or scrutiny from law enforcement, friend or foe. They say little, seek help from no one and are fearful of the press. For once, in the annals of Boston crime, the usual suspects from Southie and the North End were not rounded up after the robbery. Why? Because they didn't have a clue about it until after it went down. When Jimmy "The Tooth" Kelly, Frankie "The Shanks" Martell and Sal "The Clam'' DePasquale found out about it and how much the loot was worth, they desperately wanted a piece of the action. Instead, they hit a stonewall.Questions surrounding the mystery are endless. If it wasn't the Irish or the Italian mobsters, then who was it? Why were some paintings taken and not others? Was it an inside job? Was it payback by someone who had it in for the FBI, the Boston Irish, or the Italian mob? Were people being protected and if so, why? Who was in charge of the Boston field office in 1990? Was McGrath ever close to solving the case? What did the United States Attorney do to try to solve it. Was the Strike Force looking at it? Who was McGrath's boss at the time? Why weren't there any Boston police cruisers seen in the area during their routine patrol? Why didn't the two robbers disguise themselves? Why was one guard able to fall asleep and the other couldn't because he was petrified about what might happen to them? How did the thieves know the layout of the museum's convoluted basement...were they schooled or had they been there before?Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a fast-paced, spell-binding story of political scandal, deceipt, public corruption and deception, as you join FBI agent Ted McGrath and his crew in their quest to recover the paintings. While McGrath, Savage, Fenore, agent Mullen and Attorney Fowler try to keep the momentum going, certain people in places of power want the group to fail. As progress is made in the twenty year old mystery, it becomes clear to McGrath and Fowler, that someone is equally determined to stymie the investigation and desperately wants sins of the past to remain in the vault. The convoluted twists and turns of the maze-like investigation, will have your head spinning, while the ebb and flow of emotion, frustration, anger, disgust and loathing, will have you talking to yourself. Once immersed in this incredible story, the pages can't be turned fast enough to see where the mission next takes McGrath's "Amigo's", what obstacles they face, the risks they must take and what they finally accomplish as a team, turning what appeared to all to be simply a Fool's Errand, into an incredible masterpiece of detective work.
