The Latin American Urban Crónica explores the fluid relationship between high and low culture in Latin America. Paying attention to the peculiar development of the cultural fields in Latin America and to the consequences of present processes of globalization, Esperança Bielsa examines the contemporary crónica in Mexico City and Guayaquil and its role in representing unofficial culture in its widest sense. This unique work is the product of the study of numerous texts and interviews with the main writers of crónica and also incorporates extensive research on reception. Essentially interdisciplinary in its approach, The Latin American Urban Crónica is one of the very few publications about this fascinating and understudied mixed genre of the area between journalism and literature, and the first to systematically situate the Latin American crónica within social and cultural theory.

South America is a region that enjoys an unusually high profile as the origin of some of the world’s greatest writers and most celebrated footballers. This is the first book to undertake a systematic study of the relationship between football and literature across South America. Beginning with the first football poem published in 1899, it surveys a range of texts that address key issues in the region’s social and political history. Drawing on a substantial corpus of short stories, novels and poems, each chapter considers the shifting relationship between football and literature in South America across more than a century of writing. The way in which authors combine football and literature to challenge the dominant narratives of their time suggests that this sport can be seen as a recurring theme through which matters of identity, nationhood, race, gender, violence, politics and aesthetics are played out. This book is fascinating reading for any student, scholar or serious fan of football, as well as for all those interested in the relationship between sports history, literature and society.

It also explores race and class tensions in Brazil and shows how soccer is central to the country's dramatic trajectory toward modernity and economic power"--

he Brazilian author Clarice Lispector (1920-1977) is arguably Latin America's most celebrated female writer. Yet her prose has remained tantalisingly elusive, resisting any facile appropriation and lending itself to be read in a variety of contexts. Lispector's enigmatic yet luminous writings warrant fresh , multi disciplinary readings. Here, twelve distinguished international scholars discuss the modernity pulsating throughout Lispector's work, examining not only her unconventional novels and famous short stories, but also her chronicles and children's books, in order to reassess her groundbreaking exploration of the fluid catagories of gender and genre, her hybrid textualisations of time, self and nation.

Football (soccer in the United States) has a long history in the Americas, but it currently displays many signs of crisis. In South America the combination of spectator violence, poor business management, and the emigration of players is undermining professional football. In the United States, in contrast, a professional league (Major League Soccer) has taken root in the last decade, and the U.S. women's team has gained international success. Football has always provided its players and fans with identity and belonging, whether to a nation or to a particular social group. It has been both a vehicle for the politically ambitious and an arena in which citizens can make sense of national failings and contest existing power structures. This volume explores many of these themes. The fifteen essays range widely, with theoretical and empirical contributions on the region as whole, as well as chapters specifically on Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and the United States.
