Günter Grass, says The Times, 'is on his own as an artist', and indeed this extraordinary, provoking and joyously Rabelaisian celebration of life, food and sex is unique. Lifted from their ancient fairytale, the fisherman and his wife are still living today. During the months of Ilsebill's pregnancy, the fisherman tells her of his adventures through time with the Flounder, constituting a complete reworking of social, political and gastronomic history.

THE STORY: As described in The Village Voice: Damato's protagonists are a paranoid, nearly blind old woman and a young girl who answers her ad for a servant. During the process of the interview, the old woman's fear of the outside world shows itself bit by bit, partly through the slightly veiled hostility of her questions, partly through her revelations about herself. She tells the applicant that she used to suffer from what she calls the Flounder Complex ('the flounder has a dreadful fear of death,' she explains. 'It buries itself in the mud at the bottom of the river and waits to be speared.'), but claims to have cured herself. When the girl realizes just how far gone her potential employer is, she decides she doesn't want the job after all; but the old woman, terrified because the girl-who now knows all about her-poses a threat to her safety, shoots her. The author draws from this confrontation a gripping tension, and the old woman is a remarkable creation, as blind and dangerous to herself as she is symbolically, to the outside world.

A couple of odd organizations involving the elderly residents of High Towers in T-Ville are plotting to hoard…something, and store it…somewhere. They think their activities in this regard may be illegal, but necessary. Someone falls down an elevator shaft at the towers and dies. Accidentally? Or on purpose? The Bright Lights and Cataract Club and the Presbyopians of America are not necessarily all they seem to be. (And they can't necessarily see all they mean to be.) To get the other residents of T-Ville out of town and out of the way the day the "product" is delivered, word goes out about the 75th Annual Flounder Flats Festival being held that day. Most residents attend, even though they've never heard of this festival before. Most are unaware of severe weather headed their way, or that the festival is in a swamp. Swamps are bad places for festivals and parking lots. Things tend to sink. For no good reason, everyone starts to worry about being gobbled up by a ravenous space creature. Uncle Bert insists repeatedly that there is NO space creature in the story, but as often happens, the characters in the story may know more than the narrator. Breaking the fourth wall once again, it's a Strange Uncle Bert story that will be sure to keep you laughing!

This book gathers current data on the two types of fish metamorphoses and their endocrine controls. It will be of interest for fish biologists as well as comparative physiologists and endocrinologists. Metamorphosis is a major developmental phase characterized by morphological and physiological changes. It prepares organisms for a drastic shift in habitat and behavior. Among vertebrates, besides the well-known larval metamorphosis in amphibians, two types of metamorphosis are also described in the life cycle of some fish species. Larval metamorphosis, also called first metamorphosis or true metamorphosis, is encountered in lampreys, representative species of basal vertebrates as well as in some teleost groups, elopomorphs and pleuronectiforms, and possibly also in some other teleost species. Secondary metamorphosis occurs in juveniles of some diadromic migratory teleosts, such as salmons and eels, and compared to larval metamorphosis, involves less drastic morphological changes.
