With the publication of this present volume, the combined work of noted scholars of Knox's life and work, and the decorative arts of this important period (1895-1912), Knox's reputation will be firmly established alongside other great names in design such as C. R. Mackintosh, C. F. A. Voysey, Christopher Dresser, Josef Hoffman, Henry van de Velde and Hector Guimard. Containing not only essays that reveal new information about Knox's personal and artistic activities as well as the origins of his unique and compelling style with its inventive, sinuous Celtic knotting, this volume provides the most extensive collection of illustrations ever assembled of Knox's vast body of work. It will become the standard reference work on Archibald Knox for scholars, students, collectors and connoisseurs of 'the Liberty Style', Art Nouveau and British and European Modernist Decorative Art for years to come.

A luminous sequel to the highly acclaimed first volume of Theatres of Memory, Island Stories is an engrossing journey of discovery into the multiple meanings of national myths, their anchorage in daily life and their common sense of a people's destiny. Raphael Samuel reveals the palimpsest of British national histories, offering a searching yet affectionate account of the heroes and villains, legends and foibles, cherished by the "four nations" that inhabit the British Isles. Samuel is interested by the fact that traditions can disappear no less abruptly than they were invented. How is it, he asks, that the Scots have lost interest in a British narrative of which they were once a central protagonist? Why is the celebration of "Britons" thriving today just as its object has become problematic? Island Stories marvelously conveys the mutability of national conceits. Samuel calls as witness a galaxy of authorities--Bede and Gerald of Barri, Macaulay and Stubbs, Shakespeare and Dickens, Lord Reith and Raymond Williams, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Benn--each of whom sought to renew the sense of national identity by means of an acute sense of the past. Island Stories is a luminous study of the way nations use their past to lend meaning to the present and future. This sequel to the widely acclaimed Theatres of Memory is as passionate, unexpected and enjoyable as its predecessor.

The Design Encyclopedia is a compendium of the world of modern design over the last century and a half. Compiled from a number of primary and secondary sources by the American author and design historian Mel Byers, in consultation with an international team of design experts, this illustrated design reference guide provides the essential framework for a field that continues to generate intense interest worldwide. In this volume are all the essential facts pertaining to modern design: furniture and product design, graphic design, objects designed by architects, and the various styles and schools of design of the late nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries. With 832 pages and more than 700 full-color illustrations presenting the last 130 years in the history of the design of furniture, lighting, fabrics, ceramics, glassware, metalware, objects in a range of other materials, and mechanical, electrical, and electronic appliances, as well as automobiles and some inventions, this essential reference supplants Mr. Byers's earlier overview of the history of design, published in 1994. It is, however, not merely larger than its predecessor but more comprehensive, easier to navigate, and keenly focused. Here design is considered in terms of its concrete application to functional objects, relating it to craft, decorative arts, and industrial design but distinguishing it from fine art and theory. There are separate entries for designers and craftspeople, design studios, consortiums and partnerships, noteworthy manufacturers, significant historical periods and styles, and materials. The various discrete entries are organized alphabetically, and are cross-referenced where applicable. Most of the full-color illustrations are drawn from the world-renowned design collection of The Museum of Modern Art; the remainder are drawn from the Quittenbaum Kunstauktionen in Munich and Hamburg. This invaluable publication is the one essential guide for the design professional, the student, and the interested observer of design in our time.

During America's Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright's vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years' residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.
