Written by the King of Portugal-a renowned master horseman, hunter and jouster-and dedicated to his queen-this amazing book examines the knightly art of horsemanship, is a unique glimpse into the world of medieval equitation, hunting and knightly combat with the lance and sword. No where else in literature are details of historical jousting technique offered.Interwoven with this advice the Portuguese king reveals a keen sense of character as he examines the knight's soul during the frightening moments on unruly mounts and under the crushing impact of a of a heavy lance during the joust, when knights thundered against one another to earn renown and prestige. At this moment, he says, there is no hiding from one's self, and in this and other tests is a knight's mettle truly tested.Bem Cavalgar an important work on techniques surrounding the equestrian arts of the 15th century, and is a critically important work of chivalric literature, a knightly handbook that must stand with Geoffrey de Charny's Book of Chivalry or Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood and Chivalry.

This volume provides a unique introduction to the most topical issues, advances, and challenges in medieval horse history. Medievalists who have a long-standing interest in horse history, as well as those seeking to widen their understanding of horses in medieval society will find here informed and comprehensive treatment of chapters from disciplines as diverse as archaeology, legal, economic and military history, urban and rural history, art and literature. The themes range from case studies of saddles and bridles, to hippiatric treatises, to the medieval origins of dressage literary studies. It shows the ubiquitous – and often ambiguous – role of the horse in medieval culture, where it was simultaneously a treasured animal and a means of transport, a military machine and a loyal companion. The contributors, many of whom have practical knowledge of horses, are drawn from established and budding scholars working in their areas of expertise.

The formidable European longsword – featuring a double-edged straight blade in excess of 40in, and capable of being used with one or both hands – remains one of the most impressive and distinctive edged weapons of the late medieval era. Also known as the 'bastard' sword and the 'hand-and-a-half' sword, the longsword evolved from the war swords and great swords of the 14th century, and emerged as a battlefield weapon in the early stages of the Hundred Years' War. It went on to become a key weapon on the battlefields of late medieval Europe, creating a new system of sword fighting. Drawing together period sources, modern technical analysis and his own experiences with the longsword, Neil Grant explores the origins, manufacture and evolving use of this iconic late-medieval edged weapon. Illustrated throughout with specially commissioned full-colour artwork and an array of period illustrations and close-up photographs, this is the enthralling story of one of late-medieval Europe's most distinctive and deadly close-combat weapons.

Early modern princely courts were not only inhabited by humans, but also by a large number of animals. This coexistence of non-human living beings had crucial impacts on the spatial organization, the social composition and cultural life at these courts. The contributions enrich our knowledge on another aspect of court life and invite to reconsider our basic understandings of court, courtiers and court society.

Charny was a knight who lived the chivalric life for nearly two decades in a manner thought ideal by his contemporaries, dying appropriately in battle at Poitiers in 1356. He was also the first documented owner of the Shroud of Turin. This volume establishes the cultural context in which Charny lived in the first section and sets forth in the second the French text of Charny's fascinating work alongside an English translation, with full critical apparatus. The Book of Chivalry is the most pragmatic of all surviving chivalric manuals. Written at the height of the Hundred Years War, it includes the essential commonplaces of knighthood in the mid-fourteenth century and gives a close-up view of what one knight in particular absorbed of the medieval world of ideas around him, what he rejected or ignored and what he added form his experience in camp, court and campaign. Geoffroi de Charny was one of the quintessential figures of his age, with honors and praise bestowed upon him from both sides of the English Channel. He prepared the Book of Chivalry as a guide for members of the Company of the Star, a new but short-lived order of knights created by Jean II of France in 1352 to rival the English Order of the Garter. This work proves a rich source for investigating questions about the political, military, religious and social history of the later Middle Ages. The prowess and piety of knights, their capacity to express themselves, their common assumptions, their views on masculine virtue, women, and love once more come vividly to life.

To understand Christine de Pizan's voice we must pay attention to the culture from which it spoke and the audiences to whom it was spoken. This collection attempts to address both concerns, partly to understand how and why Christine's work fell from discussion, partly to investigate how and why she has been so often misread, and finally to emphasize a fact amply documented but often ignored - that Christine de Pizan was an influential author for several centuries after her death, that she never completely disappeared, that we have, in truth, merely rediscovered her.
