With more than 50 full colour global maps, regional maps to illuminate key aspects, colour photos of rare creatures and detailed case studies, it remains the essential guide and reference to what is going on and why it is so important.A fully illustrated and comprehensive guide to the world's endangered plants and animalsFull colour maps and graphics provide at-a-glance information on species lost, threatened and surviving today, including trees and other plants, birds, animals, reptiles and insects.Up to 20 per cent of species may be extinct by 2030, a loss that could threaten our own security. The Atlas of Endangered Species locates and identifies different species of wildlife and shows how human survival depends on biodiversity. It traces the movement of animals and plants across continents and catalogues the inhabitants of different ecosystems including forests, wetlands and mangroves, coastal systems and coral reefs. It examines the major threats to biodiversity from loss of habitat to hunting and the steps being taken towards conservation.Accompanied by photographs of rare birds, mammals and plants, topics include: * prehistory * early habitat loss and extinctions * measuring biodiversity * threats to biodiversity * what lives where * ecosystems and their communities * conservation and sustainable development * planned reintroductions * trade and protected species

Endangered Species, 2nd Edition, presents information on endangered and threatened mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mollusks, insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and plants. Its 240 entries -- including 40 new species added to the 2nd Edition -- were chosen to give a glimpse of the broad range of species currently facing endangerment. While well-publicized examples such as the American bison, northern spotted owl, and gray wolf are examined, so, too, are less conspicuous -- yet no less threatened -- species such as the Australian ant, Cape vulture, and Peebles Navajo cactus. The entries are spread across three volumes and are divided into sections by classes. Within each class, species are arranged alphabetically by common name. Color locator maps outlining the range of a particular species are included in each entry to help users find unfamiliar countries or locations. More than 200 color photographs provide a more concrete vision of the species. Sidebar boxes containing interesting and related information are also included in some entries.

This second edition of International Environmental Law, Policy, and Ethics revises and expands this groundbreaking study into the question of why the environment is protected in the international arena. This question is rarely asked because it is assumed that each member of the international community wants to achieve the same ends. However, in his innovative study of international environmental ethics, Alexander Gillespie explodes this myth. He shows how nations, like individuals, create environmental laws and policies which are continually inviting failure, as such laws can often be riddled with inconsistencies, and be ultimately contradictory in purpose. Specifically, he seeks a nexus between the reasons why nations protect the environment, how these reasons are reflected in law and policy, and what complications arise from these choices. This book takes account of the numerous developments in international environmental law and policy that have taken place the publication of the first edition, most notably at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2012 'Rio + 20' United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. Furthermore, it addresses recent debates on the economic value of nature, and the problems of the illegal trade in species and toxic waste. The cultural context has also been considerably advanced in the areas of both intangible and tangible heritage, with increasing attention being given to conservation, wildlife management, and the notion of protected areas. The book investigates the ways in which progress has been made regarding humane trapping and killing of animals, and how, in contrast, the Great Apes initiative, and similar work with whales, have failed. Finally, the book addresses the fact that while the notion of ecosystem management has been embraced by a number of environmental regimes, it has thus far failed as an international philosophy.

"The Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas"—the first comprehensive statewide survey of Iowa's breeding birds—provides a detailed record of the composition and distribution of the avifauna of the Hawkeye State. The atlas documents the presence of 199 species, 158 of which were confirmed breeding. This landmark volume will alert Iowans to the limited distribution of numerous species and serve as a guide to the management practices—such as forest and wetland management, set-aside programs, reduction in farm chemical use, and crop diversity—which could help insure that many future changes are positive ones. "The Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas" provides a welcome and much-needed baseline for future comparisons of changes in Iowa's birdlife and, by extension, the lives of all animals in the state.
