African swine fever, classical swine fever, pseudorabies, influenza A virus in swine, etc. are some of the common swine diseases. Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious disease of swine that causes skin lesions, fever and convulsions, and ultimately culminates in death. Artificial immunization procedures can confer immunity against this condition. Diagnostic tests, such as direct and indirect immunofluorescence, ELISA and histology of the brain can be used to detect the disease. Swine vesicular disease (SVD) is another acute and contagious viral disease that is caused by the swine vesicular disease virus. It is typically characterized by fever, ulcers in the mouth and snout, feet and teats. This disease can infect pigs by exposure to feed containing lethal meal scraps, or infected fecal matter. Since no vaccine exists for this condition, various eradication measures are adopted such as quarantining infected areas, disposal and depopulation of infected pigs and disinfecting contaminated premises. This book covers in detail some existing theories and innovative concepts revolving around swine health. Some of the diverse topics covered in this book address the varied swine diseases that fall under this category. It is a vital tool for all researching or studying swine diseases as it gives incredible insights into emerging trends and concepts.

Innovative in content and perspective, this introduction to contemporary animal science puts all of animal science in perspective by examining not only the traditional biological topics (e.g., major species, nutrition, digestion, feeds, genetics, reproduction, disease, and animal behavior) but by exploring the dynamic nature of animal science and the many ways in which it is a piece of a much larger whole of agriculture (e.g., vertical integration of industry structure) and agriculture within society (e.g., how animals fit into all of society and how animals contribute to the well being of man from a worldwide perspective). The Value of Animals to Man. Factors Affecting World Agricultural Structure. Worldwide Systems of Agricultural Production. Introduction to Nutrition. The Gastrointestinal Tract. Feedstuffs. Genetics. Animal Breeding. Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. Reproductive Physiology. Lactation. Animal Behavior and Handling. Animal Health and Diseases. Vertical Integration. The Beef Cattle Industry. The Dairy Cattle Industry. The Poultry Industry. The Swine Industry. The Sheep and Goat Industries. The Horse. Companion Animals. The Llamoids. Rabbits. Aquaculture. Careers and Career Preparation in Animal Science. Animals As Consumers of Grain: Asset or Liability. Food Safety. Animal Welfare and Animal Rights. The Role of Animals in Sustainable Agriculture. Through successive editions, Management and Welfare of Farm Animals has gained international recognition as a classic introductory textbook for students of agriculture and veterinary science. Conceived by the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW), the book has always sought to promote the humane treatment of livestock within the practical business context of modern farming. Now fully revised and updated, this fifth edition remains the most comprehensive and accessible guide available. Three animal groups appear here for the first time (game birds, South American camelids, and ostriches), and a chapter on horses has also been restored. Throughout, the book offers clear advice for the humane management of all major farmed species in the primary context of large-scale food production. However, this edition also takes full account of consumer demand (and legal requirements) for alternative farming methods and enhanced welfare standards, whether in conventional agriculture or the smallest of 'hobby' farms. Brand new chapters reflect fresh understanding of welfare science, ethics, and the role of society in ensuring the best possible farm conditions. It remains an indispensable resource for students, and for all those seeking to promote animal welfare. Published as a part of the prestigious Wiley-Blackwell – UFAW Animal Welfare series. UFAW, founded 1926, is an internationally recognised, independent, scientific and educational animal welfare charity. "It includes a review of the state of the art in animal genomics and its applications to animal health. The contributions describe the new tools available, such as HapMaps for chicken and cattle, and show how the understanding of gene structure and function can be successfully applied to delineate the molecular mechanisms of disease and determine complex phenotypes associated with health traits. A critical evaluation of future needs and future applications of animal genomics is also presented. The integration of animal genomics in animal health research is likely to revolutionize the way scientists approach the challenges of discovering highly effective drugs and vaccines for animal diseases."--BOOK JACKET.

Modern Livestock and Poultry Production gives the reader a very true sense of the world of the livestock industry. It sets the scene for work in the field with an overview of the industry, then moves into detailed and engaging discussions of specific species. The book addresses animal genetics, breeding, nutrition, biotechnology and product promotion, based on the most up-to-date research available. The book thoroughly addresses such major farm animal enterprises as beef cattle, swine, sheep, horses, poultry and dairy cattle. And, it covers minor animal enterprises including rabbits, bison, ratites, llamas and alpacas. All of this is complemented by an extensive discussion of career opportunities and job expectations in the industry, as well as such industry concerns as environmental and safety issues.
