The Slamming Door is a true story. Find out how an Aspie who has learned social skills by rote, one who has earned respectable academic credentials but does not function well in many work environments, navigates a labyrinth of death, dying and loss, and how she copes with anxiety induced by travel and changes in her environment, and how she slowly, painstakingly comes to recognize the signs of hostility around her while making no apology for who she is. In September of 2008, Clarisse N. Renard was asked to move in with a man who had just been diagnosed with bone cancer…by his daughter, Berta, who knew that she was a writer and available. Berta had to work in an office, so she couldn’t be her father’s caregiver. The man was her husband’s older cousin, Bryn, a Harvard-educated, retired New York City social worker, and Clarisse and her husband Damon had stayed with him many times. He was also one of her best friends after eight years of visits, a confidante, and like another dad to her. The request, which was also an invitation of sorts, felt like a chance to pay her cousin-in-law back for all of the emotional and other support he had given to Clarisse and Damon. She didn’t know Berta very well, but had been excited to find that her marriage came with a female cousin her own age. Clarisse looked forward to getting to know her better. When he realized that he couldn’t stay home alone while terminally ill, Bryn wanted Clarisse with him and told her so the evening that she arrived. However, he warned her that Berta and her older half-sister were very jealous of the fact that she was there with him. Berta resented Clarisse in many ways, and gradually revealed her true self: a bully. Read on to find out how an articulate and meticulous Aspie dealt with all of these problems and situations, and how she viewed it all. People with Asperger’s are not broken; their brain patterns merely differ from those of the majority of the population. Aspies have produced great novels, scientific discoveries, and the foundations of the best legal system on the planet, namely The Declaration of Independence. Asserting oneself, knowing that no good deed will be judged with appreciation by a bully, is an act of courage and defiance, but also a necessary one. There is nothing wrong with those who are different. The problem is those who won’t accept or respect them. The memoir includes photographs of points of interest in Manhattan, and of other items of interest.

Author Jen Kimberley was building a life for herself in Denver, Colorado after the death of her husband from lung cancer when she was accidentally diagnosed with leukemia. In My Cancer Survival Saga, she shares her personal story. Her narrative covers mistakes she made, things she learned the hard way, and people who helped her. It describes her first encounters with alternative cancer treatments such as IPT and hyperthermia; her changes in diet and lifestyle that removed toxins and increased oxygen levels; and the weight loss and weakness known as cachexia and coming out of it alive and strong despite conventional predictions. In sidebars, she offers helpful and educational information for readers who want to know more about treatment options other than chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery; and she teaches how best to work towards a cure rather than just remission. Along with five of Jen’s entertaining poems, My Cancer Survival Saga also offers five sections on energy work to start clearing, validating, and protecting your own space. These include specific tools anyone can learn to use that remove stress and increase personal confidence.

This book really ought to be read on vacation, just for enjoyment. Granted, cancer is, literally, a deadly serious matter, and cancer research is primarily a part of medicine with Hippocrates in its back ground. Yet, cancer research is also natural science, and as such it yields the joys and sorrows of any science. The cancer problem is also a brain teaser, a challenge for the curious. This introductory report on experimental cancer research is there fore directed to curious students of many disciplines: naturally to medical students, but also to chemists and physicists who have an interest in biological phenomena; biology students will surely en counter pr9blems peculiar to their field in what is supposedly a medi cal one. We have attempted to write without assumptions to a certain degree, for a chemist is essentially in over his head in medicine, and a physician has only the slightest idea of the chemical problems im portant in cancer research. We had no intention of giving a complete view of the field, and from the large number of different lines of development we have chosen only a few. Chemotherapy, as an ex ample, has been treated quite cursorily, along with RNA tumor viruses, although it is possible that just these subjects are especially important for human tumors. Tumor induction via radiation could only be mentioned in passing, in spite of its great practical significance; similarly the role of hormones was only intimated.
