To help teachers teach science through investigations, Seven Sides Publishing has provided a series of lab manuals for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Systems. These manuals are a rich resource of simple hands-on labs. They each cover 100% of the TEKS for their respective classes. Three lab manuals (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) cover 100% of the TEKS for five different classes (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, IPC, and Environmental Systems). Physics and Chemistry together cover 100% of the IPC TEKS, and Biology also covers 100% of Environmental System TEKS. There is a shortage of user-friendly labs for science concepts. These lab manuals are here to fill in that gap. Too many labs have too much busy information in them; this is not the case here. We have taken a lot of the traditional labs that have been used for decades and simplified them so they are easy to read and perform. Each section starts with a concept map that organizes vocabulary to speak to your students to give visual clues to allow understanding and relationships of the vocabulary. Each section ends with a list of virtual investigations that complement those found in this book. Having students learn through investigations allows students to efficiently learn content and skills in the context of other content and skills; this allows students to chunk information and skills easily into long-term memory.

Environmental site investigation and characterization is a complex process that often includes a large number of variables, a limited number of resources, and not nearly enough time to complete properly. The investigation of a site is, however, potentially the most important part of an environmental project, as nearly all other aspects, from financial decisions, engineering design and construction tasks are based on the findings of an initial site investigation. The goal in site investigation is to use a number of methods to understand the conditions present on a site, and choose a clear and detailed method to record and present the findings for later reference. For larger projects, site investigations are often composed of ongoing testing and sampling over linger periods and might include several phases of implementation. Economic and political factors often play a large role in the depth and accuracy of environmental site investigations. The amount of time and resources needed to provide a complete and thorough site investigation are often lacking due to one or more economic or political factors. A simple construction project, for example, might have a very limited budget for design and construction. If the site investigation uses up time and money from the project schedule and budget without adding any additional value to the end product, the resources allocated to the site investigation are likely to be limited or reduced. By going step-by-step through the site investigation process, Geology and Environmental Site Investigation will empower students and practitioners to see the great importance that site investigation lends to the overall success of a project. Additionally, but gaining a thorough understanding of the current state of technology and methodology used for environmental site investigation, readers will better understand how to make their site investigations more efficient and beneficial to a project.

Geologists conducting environmental site investigations in compliance with Federal and State regulations are often forced to rely on limited site and/or region specific geologic and hydrogeologic data. These sites are often located in industrial areas where surficial geologic features are obscured. The purpose of this paper is to describe the use of a simple, economical petrographic analysis method performed in conjunction with an environmental site investigation to better characterize subtle changes in subsurface geology. The method differentiates changes in rock type, classifies the rock samples, and provides detailed geologic descriptions for stratigraphic correlation. The results of the analyses were instrumental to understanding the site geology and ground water transport mechanisms.

This book introduces the most commonly used techniques for dealing with multivariate data; the sort of multi-species multi-chemical data sets that are routinely encountered in environmental investigations. It assumes prior knowledge of multivariate analyses and requires no mathematics beyond simple linear equations. The topics covered include diversity indices, multiple regression, cluster analysis, and the commoner ordination techniques (principal components analysis, detreded correspondance analysis and canonical correspondence analysis). Other less used ordinations (Bray-Curtis, Correspondence Analysis) are where this helps understanding of the most commonly used techniques. Where suitable, the author shows how to construct biplots and triplots, and how to run Monte-Carlo testing. Each technique is illustrated by worked examples using simple, familiar data sets, and the key features of the output from standard software packages is explained.
