Excerpt from Thesaurus of English Words: So Classified and Arranged as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition The Thesaurus of Roget is justly held in high estimation both in England and in America. Though it is the first work of its kind that has appeared in the history of our language, the completeness of its plan, and its fulness of details, are such as to leave little to be supplied by others. The book may, in fact, be advantageously taken up by the student of English compo sition as an ample vocabulary furnished for his special use. The body of our noble language is, in this invaluable manual, anatomized, as it were, and distributed, not under any merely philological arrangement, connected with the mechanism and structure of language, but classified by the wants of the mind with reference to the purposes of expression, and the actual demands of oral or written communication.
1911 edition of the classic reference book. According to Wikipedia: "Roget's Thesaurus is a widely used English language thesaurus, created by Dr. Peter Mark Roget (1779–1869) in 1805 and released to the public on 29 April 1852. The original edition had 15,000 words, and each new edition has been larger... Roget's Thesaurus is composed of six primary classes. Each class is composed of multiple divisions and then sections. This may be conceptualized as a tree containing over a thousand branches for individual "meaning clusters" or semantically linked words. These words are not exactly synonyms, but can be viewed as colours or connotations of a meaning or as a spectrum of a concept. One of the most general words is chosen to typify the spectrum as its headword, which labels the whole group. Roget's schema of classes and their subdivisions is based on the philosophical work of Leibniz (see Leibniz—Symbolic thought), itself following a long tradition of epistemological work starting with Aristotle. Some of Aristotle's Categories are included in Roget's first class "abstract relations".
Provides more than 443,000 synonyms, antonyms, and related words in more than a thousand different categories.

A newly revised and updated 8th edition of the world's bestselling thesaurus--the only thesaurus based on Peter Roget's original reference classic of 1852. This hardcover thumb-indexed edition includes more than 443,000 words and phrases grouped into 1,075 categories. The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Roget was his development of a new principle: the grouping of words according to ideas. If the user cannot find something in a reference book, it is often because of the restriction of searching alphabetically by 'known' headwords. Dr. Roget's thesaurus thus reversed the access to allow the user to find a word from another word, a concept or an idea. When in 1852 Roget published the first book ever to realize this concept with thoroughness and precision, he called it a "thesaurus" (from the Greek and Latin, meaning "treasury" or "storehouse"). And thesaurus it has remained to this day. The ultimate reference tool, this new edition contains over 443,000 words and phrases grouped into 1,075 numbered categories. Within each category you'll find all the parts of speech, frequent cross-references, commonly-used words singled out in boldface, quotes that puts words into context , hundreds of fascinating and idiosyncratic word lists and much more. If you're a writer who needs help organizing a thought or mastering the nuance of expression, Roget's International Thesaurus® remains the first source to turn to.

The revolutionary achievement of Dr. Peter Mark Roget‘s first edition in 1852 was the development of a brand–new principle: the arrangement of words and phrases according to their meanings. Dr. Roget‘s system brings together in one place all the terms associated with a single thought or concept; it allows a wide–ranging survey of language within a book of relatively modest size, without the space–consuming repetitions that so severely limit the scope of thesauruses arranged in a dictionary format with A–to–Z entries. This brilliant organization makes Roget‘s International Thesaurus® both the most efficient word finder and a cutting–edge aid in stimulating thought, organizing ideas, and writing and speaking more clearly and effectively. This revised and updated sixth edition features thousands of new words and phrases, including the newest slang words and expressions that color and inform everyday language. It retains all of the hallmarks that have made Roget‘s International Thesaurus® an enduring classic: 埍ore than 330,000 words and phrases organized into 1,075 categories. 埁 pinpoint reference system that directs the user quickly from a comprehensive index to the numbered category of the right word. Thousands of cross–references throughout lead to other helpful categories. 埈undreds of supplemental word lists that supply the names of things which have no synonyms (measurements, wines, weapons, animals, state mottoes, and more) as well as hundreds of quotations that amplify the meanings of selected words. Generations of students, writers, editors, and speakers have made Roget‘s the most popular word reference book next to the dictionary. Continuing a legacy that dates back more than 150 years, Roget‘s International Thesaurus® is an indispensable work for everyone who wants to use the English language with clarity and precision.

In 1852 Peter Mark Roget eclipsed a rich tradition of topically based dictionaries with the publication of his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases, Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas. Based on intuition as much as on specific linguistic principles, Roget's book has been a bestseller ever since and is one of the most widely-used reference works ever published. In this book Werner H--uuml--;llen gives the first history of its genesis and publication, and investigates the principles of its structural design. The author opens with an account of Roget's life and his background in natural science. He then charts the parallel histories of dictionaries of synonyms and concepts within the general context of lexicography. Synonymy, he argues, is a necessary feature of languages without which communication would be impossible. He traces its theory and practice from Plato to the emergence of French and English synonym dictionaries in the seventeenth century. Roget's was the first such book to be arranged by topic and the first to encompass the semantic network of the entire language. The author examines the manner and method of its compilation, the practical outcomes of the traditions on which it was based, and the ways in which the Thesaurus reflects and reveals Roget's beliefs and background. A History of Roget's Thesaurus will interest students and scholars of linguistics, semantics, and lexicography, as well as anyone wishing to know more about a great literary achievement and an astonishing publishing phenomenon.

In this book Werner Hüllen examines Roget's Thesaurus in relation to linguistics, philosophy and history. He explores the influence of Roget's Thesaurus abroad (Germany and the Romance countries). He epitomizes its history and compares the various editions of the book. In lexical case studies he evaluates some entries with pertinence to their cultural and political implications. He discusses the didactic potential of thesauri in general and considers the implications of the Thesaurus for the study of scholarly linguistics and psychology. He discusses how Roget's Thesaurus prepared the way for the more recent idea of network semantics. By analyzing retrieval techniques one can show, he claims, how the words of languages were (and are) stored in the minds of those who speak them. Professor Hüllen concludes by considering the role of synonymy in language from a perspective of cognitive linguistics showing that it is indispensable for communication.
