Hospitality design in Thailand is one of the most vigorous architectural scenes in South-East Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. Thailand is not only considered as one of the richest in the region where beauty and diversity of nature is concerned, it also has cultural heritage and value that has made it a major destination for travellers today. Throughout hospitality design and its related context, Thai architects today are increasingly concerned with arriving at an appropriate architectural identity with regard to both cultural and environmental values. However, a direct movement towards modernisation of traditional characteristics is still at the inception stage. Some leading architects have suggested that Thai architects should be encouraged to make use of indigenous wisdom and design, and to incorporate the 'soul' of traditional architecture into modern creations and inventions, allowing the architects to enjoy their 'reinvention' as a kind of renaissance. This book, 'Resorts by Thai Architects' not only presents selected works by architects but also focuses on works that are widely accepted by other people such as tourists, designers and those in the hotel business from around the world. They are well recognised and the designs of these projects have been through the critical concept and integrated design stages. Some have even involved research-based design and professional marketing strategies. Thus, the 8 resort projects selected for this book are a confirmation of design and management skills, and partly a record of the development of modern Thai architecture over the last century. 250 colour photographs

Thailand's tropical climate and Buddhist philosophies greatly influence the nation s architecture. Its architectural culture is also deeply influenced by countries such as China, India, and other Southeast Asian nations. While Thailand is influenced and has been absorbing the cultural nutrition of these nations, it has also been doing some innovative work, forming its own unique cultural style. This book showcases numerous projects that combine the beauty of the countries ubiquitous tropical forests with extraordinary national symbols that are becoming increasingly popular over the years. The Thai style has gained significant recognition by architects and designers worldwide. The authors show how both authenticity and innovation can combine to work in contemporary design. In the words of the author, "Authenticity is what makes the difference, and understanding and drawing inspiration from the past is what can give Thai heritage design new life. Moreover, traditional Thai architecture sufficiently embodies human-oriented and environmentally friendly notions, demonstrating the natural, unsophisticated, delicate and harmonious characteristics in architectural details." This book will satisfy those looking to absorb traditional Thai architecture, and through rich photography and full descriptions of numerous case studies, this book will introduce readers to the most current design ideas for contemporary Thai hotels and resorts.

This issue explores the creation, materialisation and theorisation of some of the world's most significant and spectacularly patterned spaces. It investigates how interiors, buildings, cities and landscapes are patterned through design, production and manufacturing, use, time, accident and perception. It also brings into focus how contemporary advanced spatial practices and CAD/CAM are now pushing patterns to encompass a greater range of structural, programmatic, aesthetic and material effects and properties.
