The figure of the rebel of the 1950s shaped the imagination of the American post-war generation. Yet the notoriety of the rebel resides uneasily beside that of the conformist, ironically one of the other central figures of the decade. This collection of essays, which originated at an international conference in Trier, Germany, in 2005, sets out to explain the multiple representations of rebellion and affirmation in 1950s American culture. It explores the ways in which rebellion was 'contained' and also disruptive during this pivotal decade of American ascendance on the global scene. In a series of essays written by prominent American Studies scholars in the United States and Germany, the collection explores the meaning of rebellion in the 1950s and its role in shaping theological, literary and cultural discourses.

Russia and the separatists it backs in Ukraine’s East are no longer quite on the same page, especially since the Kremlin abandoned ideas of annexing the breakaway republics or recognising their independence. The rift gives the new Ukrainian president an opportunity for outreach to the east’s embattled population, including by relaxing the trade embargo.

Where would America be without Harley-Davidson? And where would Harley-Davidson be without Americans who ride? Rebels With A Cause is a celebration of those riders - their passion for, their love affair with, the motorcycle of America. Here in their own words, riders energetically explain how their lives have become intimately intertwined with their bikes, why they have chosen the "Harley lifestyle" with such enthusiasm. From regular folks to celebrities to club members, these are Americans with a shared commitment, Americans whose lives have been changed and defined by their devotion to the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Purchasing a Harley is a rebellious act. It's a rebellion against the status quo, a rebellion against the over-regulated, technology-heavy life that our culture has become. In Rebels With A Cause rejoice in this fond and colorful record of the people and machines involved in this most American expression of creative non-conformity.

Why are Americans of African descent, as a group, not flourishing like other racial groups in America? Dr. J. M. Sparrow, in Rebels with Insufficient Cause, proposes that value formation through the biblical model of the family is lacking. The secular world is redefining and reinterpreting the social structures that God created in order for humans to enjoy maximum human flourishing. Every person or social group that chooses to ignore God’s designs for humanity will experience chaos, but every person and social group that submits to God’s designs for humanity will experience order. Americans of African descent are experiencing that chaos in greater measure than any other racial group. Since this book holds to a biblical worldview that teaches that all humans are created equal, Americans of African descent are not inherently more debased than other races. However, since the out-of-wedlock birth rate is astronomically higher in black communities than in others, they are experiencing a greater share of the chaos. Yet all is not lost. When Americans of African descent begin to hold up the truths of the Bible as normative and encourage future generations to practice the same, things will begin to turn around. Americans of African descent must choose to reject the victim mentality, see themselves as part of the larger American culture rather than as outsiders, and inculcate biblical values on their children in the midst of loving, supportive, and God-honoring family units.
