Written out of the author's awareness of the problems many students and young researchers encounter when writing their research papers, this book is a simplified presentation of the fundamentals of research. Its technically simple style is aimed at making the book accessible to people of all academic persuasions. Most research studies or projects begin with a written proposal. For this reason, the book starts with a section on how to write a good standard research proposal. In the second section, the book discusses in detail the way in which a research project, dissertation or thesis must be outlined once the research proposal has been accepted. Chapter three looks specifically at a journal paper/article as another very important type of research paper. It gives a brief survey of important points to bear in mind when writing a journal article as well as the structure such a paper is expected to follow. Chapter four is a brief presentation of some of the methods of citation and reference styles commonly used in research.

The thesis written in the course of a Doctorate of Business Administration (or DBA) raises many questions for future DBA candidates concerning its specific orientation, content and scope. Given the central role of the thesis project in the process of educating DBA candidates, who will hold a practice-oriented doctoral degree in management, it appeared to be the perfect time to stimulate a collective reflection process on this crucial phase of work on a doctoral thesis: the development of the DBA thesis proposal and project. This book is the latest in the series of publications launched in 2015 by the Business Science Institute in partnership with the publisher EMS, with the aim of producing a set of books that will guide the academic work of doctoral candidates on the threshold of the scientific education process that culminates in a DBA. The collection published in 2015, La création de connaissance par les managers, was intended to establish the main benchmarks for the new role managers are assuming in their practice: producer of new scientific knowledge. Then the imposing Research Methods for the DBA (published 2019) presented a diversified set of methodological approaches and tools new researchers can use to conduct their DBA research. The articles collected in this book are written mainly for candidates who need guidance and orientation as they start to formulate their thesis research project. Among other things, it presents the various steps in the process of developing a detailed thesis proposal, describes the factors that ensure a high-quality thesis project statement, and clarifies the roles and expectations candidates must handle as they initiate their research projects. With contributions by: Paul BEAULIEU, Pierre-Jean BENGHOZI, Marc BONNET, Françoise CHEVALIER, L. Martin CLOUTIER, Emmanuel JOSSERAND, Michel KALIKA, Sébastien LIARTE, Jean MOSCAROLA, Vincent MOTTET, Isabelle WALSH.

A previous AJN Book-of-the-Year Award winner, Burns & Grove’s The Practice of Nursing Research: Appraisal, Synthesis, and Generation of Evidence, 9th Edition is the trusted resource for those wanting to master the research methods that are foundational to evidence-based practice. This highly respected textbook covers how to appraise and apply existing research evidence, as well as how to participate in research and quality improvement projects. This new 9th edition has been extensively updated to reflect today’s focus on online research in the digital era and includes clear, step-by-step guidelines for all major quantitative and qualitative research approaches — including supporting examples from the latest high-quality literature. There’s also new content on translational research, coverage of the most current research tools and techniques, and an increased use of illustrations, tables, and other visuals to help engage visually oriented readers of all levels. Coverage of quantitative, qualitative, and other research methodologies provides a solid foundation to conduct, appraise, and apply research evidence to the realities of today's clinical practice. Balanced coverage of qualitative and quantitative methods addresses the qualitative research methodologies that are often the starting point of research projects, particularly in magnet hospitals and DNP programs. Clear, comprehensive coverage is organized into five units that include: an introduction to nursing research; coverage of the research process; application for evidence-based health care; how to analyze data, determine outcomes, and disseminate research; and how to propose and seek funding for research. Strong emphasis on evidence-based practice addresses this key graduate-level QSEN competency and reinforces how to generate research evidence and appraise and synthesize existing research for application to clinical practice. Rich examples from nursing literature bring research principles to life. Emphasis on the most currently used research methodologies focuses on the methods used in both quantitative research and qualitative research, as well as outcomes research and mixed-methods research. Coverage of digital data collection examines the use of online research tools. Quick-reference summaries include a table of research methods inside the front cover and a list of types of research syntheses (with definitions) inside the back cover. Helpful user resources are included with each new text purchase on the companion Evolve website and feature 400 interactive review questions along with a library of 10 full-text research articles.

The Department of Health and Human Services has identified Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) as the foremost public health problem in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that, as of December 31, 1994, there were 441,528 documented cases of AIDS in this country, and the number is increasing. AIDS is an illness characterized by a defect in natural immunity against disease. Many more individuals are known to be infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) but do not have symptoms or the defming characteristics of AIDS. The incubation period for AIDS may range from 1 to 10 or more years in adults and 6 months to several years in children. Infected persons appear to be capable of transmitting infection indefinitely, even if they remain asymptomatic. In order to increase the number of minority investigators conducting research on HIV infection and 1 AIDS, NIMH conducted a 3h-day technical workshop for minority investigators on July 24-27. 1990, in Fairlakes, Virginia. University-based research programs were asked to nominate investigators who were selected on the basis of a referred 1 0-page prospectus for a proposed research project. This procedure was used because NIMH wanted to be sure that the prospective investigators were established in a research environment that would pr

Proposing Empirical Research: A Guide to the Fundamentals provides step-by-step instructions for students who will be writing their first research proposal in the social and behavioral sciences and using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The structure of the book enables students to work independently with confidence while writing the first drafts of their proposals. Each major section is divided into short topics and for each topic, students are asked to complete an exercise that leads them toward the goal of preparing a proposal. Numerous illustrative examples throughout the book make the recommendations for proposal writing come alive. In addition, the 10 model proposals provided at the end of the book illustrate proposal writing and provide material for classroom discussions. New to the Sixth Edition: Updates throughout to reflect research and learning in the digital/online environment, e.g., online surveys, digital organization tools, digital recruitment methods for research, and digital databases, records, and archives. Discussion of qualitative methods. Updated references, model proposals, end of chapter exercises etc. Proposing Empirical Research is ideal for use in research methods classes where students write a proposal as a term project, thesis/dissertation preparation classes, senior research seminars where proposing and conducting research is a culminating undergraduate activity, and any graduate-level seminar in which the instructor wants to incorporate a project that will engage students in critical thinking about the content area.
