When the controversial book, Personal Influence: The Part Played by People in the Flow of Mass Communications, was published in 1955, it made waves across the fields of communications, public opinion research, political science, and marketing. In The Citizen Audience, Richard Butsch explores the cultural and political history of audiences in the United States from the nineteenth century to the present.
