A Poem at the Right Moment collects, and preserves, poems—called catus—that have circulated orally for centuries in South India. The poems are remarkable for their wit and precision, their lyrical insight on the commonplace, their fascination with sensual experience, and their exploration of the connection between language and desire. Taken together the catus offer a penetrating critical vision and an understanding of the classical traditions of Telugu, Tamil, and Sanskrit. Each poem is presented in a contemporary English translation along with the Indian-language original. An introduction and a concluding essay explore in detail the stories and texts that comprise the catu system. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Poetic Verses contains exactly that, verses of poetry along with some song lyrics. This poetry book is of its own kind. It shows you how my heart beats when I'm in love or in agony over a lost loved one. My poems don't forecast the future, or make you think "What is the Poet really trying to say here?" They simply show you just how I was feeling during a specific time or relationship in my life. That's what makes this book such a good read! Everyone can relate to a good poem about lust, pain, love, and yearning for someone you can't have. A few of my poems, I've been told, have actually given insight and guidance into people's own relationships. I hope that my book of poems will show you how it feels to be loved, hurt, excited, bummed out or plain old happy to be alive! I was only 11 years old when my grandpa, to whom I was very close, passed away. I cried my heart out for a whole day (that's similar to an entire year according to adults). I wanted to remember him, and I wanted my family to know how much he meant to me. At his wake, my mom read the poem that I wrote in his honor. It wasn't a great poem, but, it was the thought that counted. From that point on, poetry was my outlet for my, normally heart-wrenching, emotions. All I did was write poem, after poem, after poem on my dad's old Macintosh. We moved not long after grandpa died; and the Mac got tossed, along with all my poetry on its hard drive. Since then, I grew up to become the 26 year-old Poet I am today.

Have I said something unique? Some say indeed...Well, hurrah for me. No, in truth, not so. But before we begin, this you must know. I'm just a simple poet, just a thinker devoted to love and faith, truth and humanity, all these ideas you'll see. However, let me remind that my ideas are not mine. This fact I implore, as I don't conceal nor covet, I only share and adore. For ideas are ageless and timeless, ever the more priceless and belonging to the world...to worlds and realms evermore. Verily, I'm but compilations and regurgitations interwoven with humble motives and inspirations from giants and icons, prophets and artists, salvaged over the centuries now repackaged to you...I pray you enjoy them. I pray they unleash your smile. I pray they provoke you to ponder. I pray they aid in your escape from any personal imprisonments you keep, then assist you in gliding towards places you never imagined your soul could soar to. I pray they ignite your spirit to relish your days even more than you already do, and to love your neighbors with banners of forgiveness and justice flown for all to witness. I pray these words awaken you to realize how purposeful you are by your unique existence. And even if we never meet and only greet through these poems you'll read, please believe the following in the end; that we're all united in oneness, long-lost friends and distant kin...Yours truly...d. b. byuti

I have attempted to include poems that are easily understood, readily associated with one's daily life and circumstances. Because of it's diversity, hopefully this book will be appealing to everyone. I have also attempted to share my own life's experiences, good, bad and indifferent, in a way that is clear and tasteful to the reader. Mostly all of my work deals with reality, my personal concept of how things are, the way I think things should be, and ultimately, the way I think things should turn out. I am fortunate enough to have had parents that were not only christians but ministers. Because of my religious backgroud and upbringing, my insights are critical when engaged in relationships of husband and wife, family, and friends and associates. I hope when you read my work, you will enjoy it as much as I did creating it. Maybe in some small way, you too may be inspired to reach out to someone, if you haven't already. My philosophy is there is no better medicine for the soul then caring.

Excerpt from Sind die Gedichte "Poem On Pastoral Poetry" Und "Verses On The Destruction Of Drumlanrig Woods" Von Robert Burns? About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Designed by the acclaimed Coralie Bickford-Smith and beautifully set, these slim, A format volumes are the ultimate gift editions for poetry lovers. Wessex Poems was Hardy's first collection of poetry, published after he had turned away from novel writing, disillusioned by the savage reception Jude the Obscure had received. Its publication marked the start of an extraordinary new phase in Hardy's writing career: for the rest of his long life, he would write only poetry. Here are sprightly Dorset ballads, verses set during the Napoleonic Wars, and personal poems reflecting on Hardy's life and loves. Composed throughout Hardy's life and animated by his affection for his beloved Wessex, their publication in 1898 heralded the arrival of a major new poetic voice.

Traumatic Verses

Traumatic Verses

Close readings of -- and the stories behind -- poems that are direct documents of the Holocaust.

Category: Literary Criticism

Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Christianstadt, Dachau. The names of Nazi concentration camps evoke images of radical destitution. The atrocities we call the Holocaust defy comprehension, while thinkers continue to ponder the possibility of "poetry after Auschwitz." And yet a number of people composed poems while imprisoned in the camps. Unlike most documents about the camps, these poems are self-representations that convey the perspective of the inmates who wrote them. Traumatic Verses provides psychoanalytically informed close readings of a range of poems and discusses their significance for aesthetic theory and for research on the camps. It also tells the stories behind the composition and preservation of these poems and the history of their publication since 1945. Most of the poems appear here for the first time in English translation along with the original texts. This book fills a gap left by literary historians, who have mostly ignored writings from the camps and avoided careful scrutiny of literature produced under the Nazi regime. Studies of trauma have concentrated on post-traumatic experiences; discussions of aesthetics after the Holocaust have neglected the issue of the artistic impulse in the camps. On both counts this book constitutes a unique contribution to scholarship, showing that, when read attentively, the poems written in the camps are invaluable sites for confronting the Nazi past. Andrés J. Nader is Project Manager at the Amadeu Antonio Foundation in Berlin, and lectures at the Humboldt University.
