Amorphous silicon PV panel mass production will require to mas ter plasma chemical deposition in terms of large sizes, cost, maintenance and all other problems related to industrialization. Since plasma deposition is a novel technique, the development of all this production related know how involves a considerable technical research effort. The major problems related to the design of a production deposi tion machine are the following - deposition should be uniform on very large area substrate (typical dimension 1 meter) ; - the deposited amorphous silicon should have good electronic properties (density of state of the order or less than 16 3 10 cm /eV) and very low impurities concentrations (for exam ple oxygen atomic concentration should idealy be less than 0. 01 %) ; - the film stress should be limited, the density of ponctual defects (particulates) should remain reasonable (less than 2 per 100 cm ) ; - dopant level control should be stable and efficient ; - silane consumption should remain reasonably efficient - financial cost being important the machine productivity should be high hence deposition rate optimized ; - downtime due to maintenance should be reduced to a minimum. We present here some results on the R&D effort addressed to the above mentioned problems. An original single chamber was designed. This machine will be made available on the market for R&D purposes by a process machine company. Finally the maintenance problem is considered. Since 1977 the U.S. National Photovoltaic Program has actively supported the design, construction and operation of a variety of photovoltaic power system applications classed as Intermediate size systems and ranging in size from 15 kW to 1000 kW. To date fourteen systems have been built and generally are operating as planned. One lOOkW application project was terminated before the completion of the project due to exhaustion of funds and too ambitious of a project. The fourteen operating systems represented a total installed peak generating capacity of 1,164 kW and have delivered nearly 2,000 MWH of energy. Under the U.S. National Program two additional intermediate size photovoltaic power plants are under construction and are expected to become operational during 1984. These two plants represent a total of 1,300 kW of peak generating capacity and should deliver over 1800 MWH of energy per year. In addition the U.S. Photovoltaic Program has committed most of the funding to support the design, procurement and construction of a 1000 kW photovoltaic plant. This .plant will be constructed and installed during the 1984-1985 period. Current U. S. Program Plans do not anticipate funding any further Intermediate size photovoltaic power plants. In parallel with the government program, the private sector has begun building and installing Intermediate (and larger) size photovoltaic power systems. Over the past 21 months, the private sector has installed four Intermediate size PV systems in the U.S.

Despite of strong economic growths during the past decade and consequent rising demand of energy, no valuable steps have been taken to install new capacity for generation of the required energy. In this respect, solar PV is an option for electricity generation. A very large part of the rural population does not have the facility of electricity because they are either too remote or it is found extremely expensive to connect their villages to the national grid station. We can easily utilize the solar PV in some areas of Pakistan; this kind of energy is becoming familiar. Finally, this paper discusses the importance of solar PV technology in rural areas. Geographically, an overview of solar radiation and solar PV option for electricity generation for the country is explored from multiple perspectives comprising technical, economic, social, environmental and political aspects.
