Pieter Snayers was in many ways the premier battlepainter of the 30-Years War as he excelled in making large, detailed and often surprisingly accurate "birds-eye view" paintings of battles and sieges. His paintings are also one of the best sources of information about the dress and equipment of soldiers during the period.00His paintings are scattered across a large number of museums and private collections and only a limited number are available online. But soon it will be possible to view about 100 of his paintings from the comfort of your living room. German publisher Zeughaus Verlarg will be publishing a book on Snayers jointly written by Roland Sennewald and Pavel Hrncirik which will show each included painting on both a double page spread and with close ups of interesting parts.

Despite being considered one of the most important representatives of seventeenth-century topographical battle iconography in his time and today, Peter Snayers and his topographical oeuvre have never yet been thoroughly researched. For the first time, this book zooms in on Snayers's life, his oeuvre and his patrons. Using unpublished archival documents Snayers's training in Antwerp, his emigration to Brussels and integration in court society, as well as his studio, art production for the market and climb on the social ladder are investigated. Snayers's topographical oeuvre is constructed for the first time and studied in detail, especially with regard to the extent that they combined historical fact and artistic fiction, remembrance and glorification. The author identifies and examines Snayers's visual and written sources and studies his artistic inventions based on the works of predecessors and colleagues, including Georg Braun, Frans Hogenberg, Jacques Callot and Peter Paul Rubens. She also reconstructs Snayers's patronage network on the basis of archival documents and the canvases themselves and examines the intentions, functions and meanings that Snayers's tailor-made paintings had for his patrons. New light is shed on one of his most important commissions, the series ordered by the Italian commander Octavio Piccolomini, thanks to unpublished correspondence between the painter and Piccolomini's agent. By analyzing a wide range of previously unpublished archival documents on the painter, his works of art and patrons and by placing his topographical battle paintings in a historical framework, this book restores Peter Snayers to his rightful place in seventeenth-century Flemish art history. The book contains the first catalogue raisonne of Snayers's topographical oeuvre, supplemented by a record of all signed and with certainty attributed genre paintings of military subjects, landscapes and religious works. Moreover, by studying early modern topographical battle iconography for the first time in a contextual, cross-disciplinary way based on the study of art, the cartography, the literature and the architectural, military, political and socio-economic history, this book casts fresh light on this fascinating genre.

At once military, social and art history, this book elucidates various visual media, much of it little known, that denounce military cruelty in the Netherlands of the 16th and 17th century. This unique Netherlands specialty contrasts with Rubens' glorification of war, and its justification in patriotic siege prints, Scipio Africanus, and the "courtiers" of the civic guard groups and Ter Borch.

Emperor Ferdinand II (1619-1637) stands out as a crucial figure in the Counter-Reformation in central Europe, a leading player in the Thirty Years War, the most important ruler in the consolidation of the Habsburg monarchy, and the emperor who reinvigorated the office after its decline under his two predecessors. This is the first biography of Ferdinand since a long-outdated one written in German in 1978 and the first ever in English. It looks at his reign as territorial ruler of Inner Austria from 1598 until his election as emperor and especially at the influence of his mother, the formidable Archduchess Maria, in order to understand his later policies as emperor. This book focuses on the consistency of his policies and the profound influence of religion on his policies throughout his career. It also follows the contest at court between those who favored consolidation of the Habsburg lands and those who aimed for expansion in the empire, as well as between those who favored a militant religious policy and those who advocated a moderate one.

The period between the late 16th and the early 18th centuries was one of tremendous, and ultimately decisive, shifts in the balance of political, military and economic power in both Europe and the wider world. In these essays Jonathan Israel argues that Spain's efforts to maintain her hegemony continued, for a number of reasons, to be centred on the Low Countries. This had as much to do with her attempts to check the rise of France and manipulate the affairs of Germany as it had with her long war with the Dutch, Spain's overwhelming dominance in the 1580s seemed unassailable, yet by the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 its greatness had been eclipsed, leaving supremacy to Britain, France and, in commercial terms, the Dutch.

'I had been looking for someone to write to for a long time, but how does a man write letters to a god?' From his Mediterranean garden on the island of Menorca, Cees Nooteboom writes to the trident-wielding deity, Poseidon, 'initiating a dialogue not only with the past,' as Alberto Manguel observes in his Preface, 'but with an entire world that seemed lost for ever.' Offering a seductive interweaving of keen observation and the fruits of a vast knowledge, Nooteboom explores questions of human existence through the minutiae of the living world around him, and marvels at the secrets of the deep. He recalls figures in history, places he has travelled to, objets trouvés, works of art and literature, and takes a fresh look at the ancient myths. At once playful and poignant, beautiful and bizarre, Nooteboom's Letters to Poseidon are couched in the glittering prose of one of Europe's outstanding stylists.

There is little documented mapping of conflict prior to the Renaissance period, but, from the 17th century onwards, military commanders and strategists began to document the wars in which they were involved and later, to use mapping to actually plan the progress of a conflict. Using contemporary maps, this sumptuous new volume covers the history of the mapping of war on land and shows the way in which maps provide a guide to the history of war. Content includes: The beginnings of military mapping up to 1600 including the impact of printing and the introduction of gunpowder The seventeenth century: The focus is on maps to illustrate war, rather than as a planning tool and the chapter considers the particular significance of maps of fortifications. The eighteenth century: The growing need for maps on a world scale reflects the spread of European power and of transoceanic conflict between Europeans. This chapter focuses in particular on the American War of Independence. The nineteenth century: Key developments included contouring and the creation of military surveying. Subjects include the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War The twentieth century including extended features on the First and Second World Wars including maps showing trench warfare and aerial reconnaissance. Much of the chapter focuses on the period from 1945 to the present day including special sections on the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars.

This book is the first complete study of the life and work of the 17th century Dutch painter Pieter Codde (1599-1678). Alongside Rembrandt, Codde was active in Amsterdam, the largest and busiest city of the Netherlands. Codde belonged to the first generation of painters who took part in the cultural phenomenon known as the Dutch Golden Age and therefore this monograph makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the early stages of development of the Dutch school of painting and its influence on later developments. The book includes a biography of the painter as well as a systematic and comparative iconographical and stylistic study of his work with an attached extensive critical oeuvre catalogue. This book is an important tool for both art enthusiasts and collectors as well as art professionals such as students, scholars, auctioneers and art dealers.
