This was one of the most entertaining books I have ever read about Halloween. The authors have done a terrific job in giving hooks and holding suspense. Thirteen-year-old Peter, and his new friend Emily are in seventh grade. She lives a couple doors away and one day Peter decides to visit her and her grandmother. Peter has just moved in from a smaller town and into a huge lonely city. His mother is ill from being allergic to so many pollen's in the air. Today she's down resting, and Peter wonders what he can do to help. Emily's grandmother is asleep so she decides to show Peter something "special" as long as he can be trusted to keep quiet. She leads him up to the rooftop of their apartment building where she shows him a secret garden. It's lovely and the pumpkins that are covered are large and beautiful. Peter asks for one, hoping it might help his mother. Emily seems to think that it will as well. Peter asks his father to help him bake it and soon after eating some, his mother appears to feel better. The next morning she is a new person, and Peter is wondering what's going on. He decides to sneak out that night and find out what's under the other covering in that secret garden. He finds one that grows bigger and lovelier than the speed of lightening. He's just got to find out what's different about this special place. When he gets there, Emily and his parents are waiting for him. But there I go again. I'm not telling anymore about the Pumpkin King. You will love this story about love, and harvest in the city. Enjoy!: )

Halloween is a special and exciting time for pumpkins. They play games, light fireworks, and eat lots of candy. But nothing beats trick-or-treating, and Peter Pumpkin is finally getting his chance to leave the pumpkin patch and join the other pumpkins for the festivities. He gets a surprise when his sister, Petrina, tells him that instead of trick-or-treating with the communal group, he’ll be joining her and her friends on the adventure of a lifetime. First, they must get prepared, and a primary order of business is deciding what they’ll wear on their journey. They also need to be safe, because if they meet a witch, ghost or ghoul, they could be turned into pumpkin pies or worse. The pumpkins also know that Wanda--the evil ghoul--might invade the pumpkin patch if she figures out where the pumpkins keep their candy. In fact, if she had her way, she’d exterminate all the pumpkins. Join the pumpkins as they enjoy a rite of passage and navigate an exciting but dangerous Halloween tradition that dates back hundreds and hundreds of years.

Throughout their bountiful history, Vashon Island farmers have faced weevils, frost, hailstorms, war, internment, and other catastrophes by turning adversity to advantage. Why do so many Americans drive for miles each autumn to buy a vegetable that they are unlikely to eat? While most people around the world eat pumpkin throughout the year, North Americans reserve it for holiday pies and other desserts that celebrate the harvest season and the rural past. They decorate their houses with pumpkins every autumn and welcome Halloween trick-or-treaters with elaborately carved jack-o'-lanterns. Towns hold annual pumpkin festivals featuring giant pumpkins and carving contests, even though few have any historic ties to the crop. In this fascinating cultural and natural history, Cindy Ott tells the story of the pumpkin. Beginning with the myth of the first Thanksgiving, she shows how Americans have used the pumpkin to fulfull their desire to maintain connections to nature and to the family farm of lore, and, ironically, how small farms and rural communities have been revitalized in the process. And while the pumpkin has inspired American myths and traditions, the pumpkin itself has changed because of the ways people have perceived, valued, and used it. Pumpkin is a smart and lively study of the deep meanings hidden in common things and their power to make profound changes in the world around us.
