This monograph holds that an aura of mythology has surrounded conventional academic and military perceptions of British performance in the realm of irregular warfare. It identifies 10 myths regarding British counterinsurgency performance and seeks to puncture them by critically assessing the efficacy of the British way of counterinsurgency from the much-vaunted, yet over-hyped, Malayan Emergency to the withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq in 2009. It challenges perceptions of the British military as an effective learning institution when it comes to irregular warfare and critically assesses traditional British counterinsurgency strategic maxims regarding hearts and minds and minimum force.

"This collection of forums, interviews, and individual essays drawn from Historically Speaking provides contrasting views on such topics in military history as the existence and function of military revolutions in the past and present, the experience of soldiering and combat, the particularly violent and gruesome nature of twentieth-century warfare, and projections of the nature of future wars."--Back cover.

The book past, Present and Future of Kashmir deals in detail with the problem of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Beginning with the political history of the state in ancient times it presents a chronology of Kashmiri rulers - Hindus, Muslims and the British respectively. When India was to become independent it was ruled by a Hindu King who failed in either way to decide the fate of the territory like other princely states of India. As a result of the mini war between India and Pakistan a portion of it was held by the latter and is known as Azad Kashmir. In post-independence phase it continues to be a contentious issue between the two neighbours and caused four devastating wars over it. Pakistan has complaints over its accession to the Union of India because at the time, public at large, were no consulted. The very composition of Pakistani society and political system as well witnessed a sea change towards the direction opposite to India. In recent year the two have realised the futility of third party began to look forward for better bilateral understanding to great rid of this vexed problem.

"In this book, national security expert Max G. Manwaring examines the ascendance of nonstate actors in a geopolitical world. He shows how such actors have emerged parallel to the state-centric international system and have proliferated in nations undergoing crisis or collapse. Manwaring invites policy makers to look past familiar insurgencies such as those in Vietnam and Iraq and consider global security problems from multiple perspectives. He concludes that the use of calculated political and psychological power may be the most effective response in many situations." "Insurgency, Terrorism, and Crime translates the cogent lessons of recent events into workable strategies for tomorrow's leaders. Provocatively concluding that a proper combination of coordinated political, psychological, and military responses can defeat a new generation of enemies, this book is required reading for students of national security policy and foreign-policy analysis."--BOOK JACKET.

Some of the United States' greatest challenges over the coming decades are likely to emanate from the Asia-Pacific region. China and India are rising and Militant Islam continues to take root in Pakistan, while nuclear proliferation threatens to continue in fits and starts. If America is to meet these challenges comprehensively, strategists will have to learn more about Asia, and Asian scholars, policymakers, and analysts will need to understand better the enduring and timeless principles of strategy. Based on the premise therefore that the increasing strategic weight of the Asia-Pacific region warrants greater attention from both scholars and practitioners alike, Strategy in Asia: The Past, Present, and Future of Regional Security aims to marry the fields of strategic studies and Asian studies in order to help academics and practitioners to begin addressing these challenges. The book uses the lenses of geography, culture, and economics to examine in depth the strategic context that Asia presents to the major nations of the region—including the U.S. as a Pacific nation—and the strategic scenarios that may well play out in the region in the near future. Specific attention is paid to Asia as a warfighting environment, and to the warfighting traditions and current postures of the major nations.

This new work features the fresh thinking of thirty-one leading authors from a variety of military and national security disciplines. Following an introduction by Lt. Gen. James Dubik, Commander I Corps, U.S. Army, the anthology first considers the general question of whether there is a distinctly American way of war. The anthology is part of a larger Rethinking the Principles of War project, sponsored by the Office of Force Transformation and the U.S. Navy, to reexamine traditional and unorthodox approaches to the future of warfare. Diverse viewpoints, varying scope, and strong source references combine to make this compilation of essays a useful tool for students of war and general readers alike.
