The book is a comprehensive study of border-related issues arising from the 1947 Partition of India. It looks at various cases of border disputes and affrays such as disputes related to the incorporation of princely states like Kashmir and Jaunpur, the agitation for the creation of new political entities, post-partition reconstruction of Punjab and old pre-partition Punjabi leaders losing their relevance, the Kamtapuri movement, Khasi and Mizo and Chin dissatisfactions, as well as the secession of East Pakistan in 1971. An important contribution to the study of borders, the volume will be useful for students and researchers of modern Indian history, colonial India, Partition studies, borderland studies, refugee studies, minority studies, political science, film studies, postcolonial studies, and South Asian studies.

Partitioning In Aqueous Two Phase System

Partitioning In Aqueous Two Phase System

This will tend to reduce the magnitude of the product (k; KL/k}) and hence reduce the affinity partitioning effect ... effects also will be observed if one of the phase polymers is covalently bound to the macromolecule (or ligand).

Partitioning in Aqueous Two-Phase Systems: Theory, Methods, Uses, and Applications to Biotechnology is a collection of papers that discusses the applications of aqueous two-phase systems to problems of separation and extraction of macromolecules, organelles, and cells. Papers focus on the theoretical basis and the practical details of the procedures used. Some of the papers describe in one or a few steps how two components can be separated by the investigator manipulating their partitions so that one component is in one phase and the other component is in the other phase or at the interface. Investigators can also avail of developed batch extractions for plant organelles, cell membranes, nucleic acids, and proteins. The book cites as an example the partitioning of right-side-out and inside-out vesicles (obtained from fragments of thylakoid membranes) to the top and bottom phases, respectively, of a Dx-PEG system. Other papers describe the use of the countercurrent distribution when single extraction steps are not sufficient to produce a separation in materials that do not differ greatly in their partitioning behavior. The collection can prove valuable for bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, and developmental biologists.

Given the presence of a wide variety of contaminants in theenvironment, it is important to understand what drives acontaminant from one medium to another, as well as the manner andextent to which a contaminant associates with the different mediaor phases within a local environmental system. Partition andAdsorption of Organic Contaminants in Environmental Systemsforms a comprehensive resource on the behavioral characteristics ofcontaminants so that appropriate strategies can be adopted toeither prevent or minimize their adverse impacts on human welfareand natural resources. Cary Chiou’s far-reaching text depicts the processes bywhich nonionic organic contaminants are sorbed to natural bioticand abiotic substances. This book focuses on physical principlesand system parameters that affect the contaminant uptake by soilfrom water, air, and other media; by fish from water; and by plantsfrom soil and water. As contaminant uptake by natural organicsubstances is often predominantly a partition interaction, thepartition characteristics in several solvent-water model mixturesare treated in detail to elucidate the relevant physicochemicalparameters. The account of contaminant sorption to soils, fish, andplants is strengthened by companion chapters on: Fundamentals of solution theory Interphase partition equations Fundamentals of adsorption theory Vapor adsorption on mineral and carbonaceous solids No other single source in the field delivers as compelling acombination of background understanding and "state-of-the-science"comprehension of current issues. Ideally suited for agraduate-level environmental course, Partition and Adsorptionof Organic Contaminants in Environmental Systems alsoserves as a technical guide to current and future research in thefield.

Ireland and Partition: Contexts and Consequences brings together multiple perspectives on this key and timely theme in Irish history, from the international dimension to its impact on social and economic questions, alongside fresh perspectives on the changing political positions adopted by Irish nationalists, Ulster Unionists, and British Conservatives. It examines the gestation of partition through to its implementation in 1921 as well as the many consequences that followed. The chapters, written by experts based in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the United States, include new scholars alongside contributions from authorities in their fields. Together, they consider partition from a variety of often overlooked angles, from its local impact on the ground through to its place in the post-1918 international order and diplomatic relations, its implications for political violence and security policy, and its consequences for sport and economics, through to its capacity to divide both nationalism and unionism from within. This book places the current questions about the future of partition, resulting from ‘Brexit’ and the centenary of partition 2021, in a fuller perspective. It is relevant to those with an interest in Irish History and Irish Studies, as well as British History, European History and Peace Studies.

Heavy Metals in the Aquatic Environment contains the proceedings of an international conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in December 1973. This conference is co-sponsored by the International Association on Water Pollution Research, the Sport Fishing Institute, the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association, and Vanderbilt University's Department of Environmental and Water Resources Engineering. Contributors focus on the hazards posed by heavy metals present in the aquatic environment and how to control them. This text consists of 45 chapters divided into eight sections. This book assesses the environmental impact of heavy metals found in the aquatic environment; the economic impact of removing them from waste effluents; and the costs vs. benefits attained by their removal. The social costs are also evaluated. After an introduction to dose-response relationships resulting from human exposure to methylmercury compounds, the discussion turns to the toxicity of cadmium in relation to itai-itai disease; the effects of heavy metals on fish and aquatic organisms; and the analytical methods used for measuring concentrations of methylmercury and other heavy metals. The next sections explore the transport, distribution, and removal of heavy metals, along with regulations, standards, surveillance, and monitoring aimed at addressing the problem. This book will be of interest to planners and policymakers involved in water pollution control.

Graph partitioning is a theoretical subject with applications inmany areas, principally: numerical analysis, programs mapping ontoparallel architectures, image segmentation, VLSI design. During thelast 40 years, the literature has strongly increased and bigimprovements have been made. This book brings together the knowledge accumulated during manyyears to extract both theoretical foundations of graph partitioningand its main applications.
