The motivation for this book was the recognition by two of us (RL and TL) that, despite our training as cardiologists, we had a limited understand ing of many aspects of the surgical management of our patients. Conversa tions with other cardiologists at our own institution and at other medical centers around the country convinced us that many of our colleagues shared our uncertainty about the details of surgical procedures and the factors that determine decisions in the perioperative period. As surgical techniques continue to evolve, this knowledge gap can become only more severe. We therefore compiled information about cardiac surgery that might be useful for cardiologists and other nonsurgeons. We asked cardiologists what questions they would like to ask their surgical colleagues and provided these questions to the authors of the chapters. Thus, the goal of these chapters is to help nonsurgeons answer their own questions about common cardiac procedures, and to help prepare these physicians to address the questions raised by their patients. In addition, we hope that insight into these issues will improve communication between surgeons and their col leagues-and, ultimately, lead to better patient care. Minimally invasive cardiac surgery(MICS) is an integral component of every future cardiac surgeon’s training. There continues to be a growing global demand towards less invasive surgical techniques. Both cardiologist and cardiac surgeon form "heart teams" to provide patients with novel, minimally invasive procedures, with all their benefits. Less invasive techniques are often complex and require special knowhow and skills. This book offers an innovative approach to learning, utilizing QR code technology, which refers the reader to essential audio-visual material, which, along with the didactic text, focuses on practical aspects of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In modern Heart Teams, and with the advent of the hybrid era, surgeons will only be able to survive if they have state-of-the-art skills in less invasive technologies, which can be incorporated in the hybrid theatre and/or trans-catheter arena. This text accompanies the surgeon along this path, and provides clinical advice and practical solutions, beyond the necessary basic knowledge. Which courses to visit, which videos to watch, which centres to join for serious training? How best to exploit public and multimedia? How to consent a patient into a MICS procedure? How to set up a MICS program or practice? In the era of value driven outcomes, and a shift towards shorter and better patient journeys, MICS is a skill that no heart surgeon can be without. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery: A Practical Guide is a teaching resource, reference book and manual written by surgeons who both operate and teach the procedures described within. Provides access to online resources via QR codes Includes links to videos and the e-version of the text Acts as a gateway to a huge choice of minimally invasive cardiac surgery materials

Follow-up of patients after surgery is of utmost importance as results of the surgery heavily depend on the treatment of patient in the follow-up period. A good follow-up and proper treatment also provides protection to the patient from various complications and recurrence of the disease. Therapeutic guidelines and algorithms for treatment of the patients after discharge from the hospitals exist for a number of cardiovascular disorders. Still, follow-up and postdischarge treatment is very often found to be inappropriate and incomplete. This results in many avoidable complications for both the patient as well as the treating clinician. This book is designed to update the readers on follow-up regimens for some of the important cardiovascular surgical procedures. Typical supportive case scenarios are included to exemplify and highlight the various points discussed. Thus it provides an excellent opportunity to widen one’s perspective in this area.
