It has been over 50 years since the beginning of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories. It is estimated that there are over 600,000 Israeli settlers living in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and they are supported, protected, and maintained by the Israeli state. This book discusses whether international criminal law could apply to those responsible for allowing and promoting this growth, and examines what this application would reveal about the operation of international criminal law. It provides a comprehensive analysis of how the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court could apply to the settlements in the West Bank through a close examination of the potential operation of two relevant Statute crimes: first, the war crime of transfer of population; and second, the war crime of unlawful appropriation of property. It also addresses the threshold question of whether the law of occupation applies to the West Bank, and how the principles of individual criminal responsibility might operate in this context. It explores the relevance and coherence of the legal arguments relied on by Israel in defence of the legality of the settlements and considers how these arguments might apply in the context of the Rome Statute. The work also has wider aims, raising questions about the Rome Statute’s capacity to meet its aim of establishing a coherent and legally effective system of international criminal justice.

Qualitative researchers have grappled with how online inquiry shifts research procedures such as gaining access to spaces, communicating with participants, and obtaining informed consent. Drawing on a multimethod approach, Conducting Qualitative Research of Learning in Online Spaces explores how to design and conduct diverse studies in online environments. Authors Hannah R. Gerber, Sandra Schamroth Abrams, Jen Scott Curwood, and Alecia Marie Magnifico focus on formal and informal learning practices that occur in evolving online spaces. The text shows researchers how they can draw upon a variety of theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and data sources. Examples of qualitative research in online spaces, along with guiding questions, support readers at every phase of the research process.

This ebook is a selective guide designed to help scholars and students of Islamic studies find reliable sources of information by directing them to the best available scholarly materials in whatever form or format they appear from books, chapters, and journal articles to online archives, electronic data sets, and blogs. Written by a leading international authority on the subject, the ebook provides bibliographic information supported by direct recommendations about which sources to consult and editorial commentary to make it clear how the cited sources are interrelated related. A reader will discover, for instance, the most reliable introductions and overviews to the topic, and the most important publications on various areas of scholarly interest within this topic. In Islamic studies, as in other disciplines, researchers at all levels are drowning in potentially useful scholarly information, and this guide has been created as a tool for cutting through that material to find the exact source you need. This ebook is a static version of an article from Oxford Bibliographies Online: Islamic Studies, a dynamic, continuously updated, online resource designed to provide authoritative guidance through scholarship and other materials relevant to the study of the Islamic religion and Muslim cultures. Oxford Bibliographies Online covers most subject disciplines within the social science and humanities, for more information visit www.aboutobo.com.

Online Territories brings together key research and writings in the interdisciplinary study of new media and society in order to address a number of questions arising from the ways in which online technologies are currently being envisioned, used and experienced. In doing so, it offers an up-to-date contextualization of online practices and explores, from a variety of perspectives, the emergence of new experiences/routines in relation to, and new conceptions of, social space. A central rationale for this volume is the need for further, research-based contextualization of preexisting theories related with globalization, mobility, citizenship and civic participation, socio-spatial dynamics and network society, for example. Online territories are traced in relation to three distinct and interrelated pathways – the everyday; the civic and the public; and the transnational/translocal –by taking mediation, communicative practice and social space as departure points. The volume ends with an Afterword by David Morley.

Presents & discusses findings of a study to determine whether differences in petrophysical characteristics previously observed between rocks from the Giant and Con mines were associated with the presence of soluble mineral phases in the rocks. The study involved monitoring the resistivity of water used to immerse samples from the two mines (basalt and sericite schist), over a period of 340 hours, after vacuum saturation. The results show the differences between the resistivity-time curves of the water in which the samples were immersed. Suggestions for further studies are presented in the conclusion.

The Government, in consultation with the Territories and other stakeholders, has developed a strategy of re-engagement: strengthening links between the Territories and the UK; strengthening governance; and enhancing support to the Territories. This White Paper sets out priorities for action in terms of defending the Territories; supporting successful economic development; preserving the Territories' rich environmental heritage and addressing the challenges of climate change; making government work better; community issues; and strengthening links with international and regional organisations or other countries. Taking this forward will require a partnership between the UK Government and Territory Governments. The UK wants to strengthen political engagement between Ministers in the UK and the Territories, particularly through the proposed Joint Ministerial Council, and is determined to live up to its responsibilities to the Territories

Privatization is occurring throughout the public justice system, including courts, tribunals, and state-sanctioned private dispute resolution regimes. Driven by a widespread ethos of efficiency-based civil justice reform, privatization claims to decrease costs, increase speed, and improve access to the tools of justice. But it may also lead to procedural unfairness, power imbalances, and the breakdown of our systems of democratic governance. Civil Justice, Privatization, and Democracy demonstrates the urgent need to publicize, politicize, debate, and ultimately temper these moves towards privatized justice. Written by Trevor C.W. Farrow, a former litigation lawyer and current Chair of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, Civil Justice, Privatization, and Democracy does more than just bear witness to the privatization initiatives that define how we think about and resolve almost all non-criminal disputes. It articulates the costs and benefits of these privatizing initiatives, particularly their potential negative impacts on the way we regulate ourselves in modern democracies, and it makes recommendations for future civil justice practice and reform.

Presents and discusses results of effective porosity, bulk density, & electrical resistivity measurements made on samples from the Giant and Con gold mines, Northwest Territories. The samples represent mineralized and non-mineralized sections of the mines' quartz ankerite veins, sericite schist, chlorite schist, and basalt. The objective of the research is to provide basic data to be used in determining the petrophysical characteristics and electrical conductivity mechanism of these rocks, which would give information required to develop exploration strategies for aiding interpretation of electromagnetic survey data.

"As the crucifixes drenched with Jewish blood drop from our hands, we stand impotent and wordless before this tragedy of Israel and Palestine . . . In the name of the crucified Messiah, we must struggle against the conditions which make history a trail of crucifixions. Only then, in solidarity with Jews and Palestinians, can we dream of Messianic times, of a shalom without victims." With these words, theologian Rosemary Radford Reuther laid out the pitfalls for Christians entering the arena of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Nevertheless, in 1995, a small cohort of pacifist Christians decided to paddle against the currents of history, against the crusades, pogroms, and colonial enterprises of their co-religionists, toward that goal of "a shalom without victims." Setting up a project in the West Bank city of Hebron, over the next ten years Christian Peacemaker Teams forged relationships with Palestinians, Israelis, and internationals who were resisting the Israeli military occupation of Palestine. As "resident aliens" (See Exodus 23:9) they have sojourned in the Holy Land to support Palestinians and Israelis who reject violence as a means of solving the conflict, who think that one nation has no right to subjugate and exploit another, and who believe all the residents of the region are entitled to the same, exactly the same, human rights. This book charts the growth of CPT in Palestine, how it adapted to changing political conditions, spread to locations outside of Hebron, and developed networks with activists throughout Palestine and Israel.

Unusually high temperatures in 1998 in the Mackenzie Delta and Yukon coast regions prompted an investigation of the short-term response of permafrost to this warming. This paper describes an investigation that compared ice wedge characteristics from Richards Island and the Yukon coast with those from previous studies. Field observations from active-layer monitoring in the Richards Island and Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula area, and historical trends in air temperatures, are also interpreted relative to data from 1998.

The purpose of this paper is to document results of the electrical resistivity characteristics of rocks from the Astarte River Formation, central Baffin Island, for use in interpreting ground electromagnetic surveys that have been conducted in the central Baffin region. Results are presented for five black graphitic shale samples subjected to three-dimensional electrical resistivity measurements & subsequent data analysis. The samples were selected to characterize the resistivity of the Formation and to determine the effect of strong foliation containing porous layers & of disseminated sulphide mineralization oriented parallel to foliation.
