The first comprehensive study of the emergence of Devon's seaside resorts. Relating the development of these resorts to the wider processes of social and economic change, it explains why early tourists were drawn to the remote Devon coast and shows how fishing villages were transformed into fashionable watering places. Themes covered include bathing rituals and sea-water drinking, health cures and cholera epidemics, sophisticated amusements and improving recreations, paddle-steamers and excursion trains.

Global climate and the effects of global warming are commanding unprecendented interest as climates grow more dynamic and changeable. How does global warming change patterns of climate? Why is the weather and climate of the British Isles so variable? Regional Climates of the British Isles presents a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the diverse climate of the British Isles. Examining the ways in which regional climates evolve from the interplay of meteorological conditions and geography of the British Isles, leading climatologists provide detailed explanations of the climatic characteristics of eleven regions of the British Isles. Climatic distinctiveness and local weather contrasts are described for each region, together with a summary of climatic data from 1961 to the present. Reviewing the history and causes of climatic change and evaluating regional models, Regional Climates of the British Isles offers an important analysis of climatic variations. Examining future climatic change and its likely consequences, the authors acknowledge the need for regionally diverse responses to the greenhouse effect.

Both the techniques and the scope of air-photography made great advances during the twentieth century. As a result, a mass of material is available to the archaeologist and the local historian. First published in 1982, this was the first comprehensive textbook to explain in detail how to identify archaeological and historical sites from the air. Unavailable for more than ten years, this new edition will be widely welcomed - not least for the addition of a section of colour photographs. Accurate interpretation requires an understanding of the whole landscape. Archaeological sites are not always easily distinguished from geological features or from those produced by agriculture or by industrial, modern military or sporting activities. A wide selection of both archaeological and non-archaeological material is therefore illustrated in the book's 150 air-photographs. Close attention is paid to the nature of the physical remains in the ground and to the processes whereby they can appear on air-photographs. This requires an understanding of these processes - from the turning of the soil to the printing of the photograph. Throughout, the perils of misidentification receive as much consideration as the principles of correct interpretation. The types of site covered in the book are those of the British Isles but the techniques are applicable throughout continental Europe and beyond.
