The name Lis Twa is a patois corruption of the French l'histoire or, literally, "the history." In the villages across the Caribbean one will find him in the rum shops, telling stories for the education and edification of both children and adults. He is equally revered for his knowledge of the human condition and his sense of humor. In St. Lucia a large number of the older country people do not read, as they speak only patois, which is not a written language. The story teller serves as a daily newspaper for those people, interpreting both local and international events to suit the local culture.

I thank God for the ability to write from my heart, something I have never been able to do before. The death of my son,John, has definitely given me a whole different perspective about life and death. So many emotions I've had to deal with these last five years, so draining, mentally and physically. By publishing my poetry and messages from God, I call my "GodWinks" I'm sharing my heart with the world. This book is about my love for my son, my heartbreak from his death,my healing and what I have gained in my life because of the love from my son and God.My relationship with God is so wonderful and I give to him all the Praise and Glory to where I am today.God continues to direct my path, he has shown me that I still have my son but in a different way. I pray that "WORDS FROM GOD THROUGH A GRIVING MOTHER'S HEART" will show you that "time" and "God" will give your heart comfort, peace and joy once again in your life.

"Campaign finance reform has always been motivated by a definition of democracy that does not count corporations as citizens and holds that self-government works best by reducing political inequality. In the early years of the twentieth century, Congress recognized the strength of these principles by prohibiting corporations from making campaign contributions, passing a disclosure law, and setting limits on campaign expenditures. These reforms were not controversial at the time, but conservative opposition to them appeared in the 1970s. That opposition was well represented in the Supreme Court, which has rolled back reform by granting First Amendment rights to corporations and declaring the goal of reducing political inequality to be unconstitutional. Buying the Vote analyzes the rise and decline of campaign finance reform by tracking changes in the way presidential campaigns have been funded since the late nineteenth century, and changes in the debate over how to reform fundraising practices. A close examination of major Supreme Court decisions shows how the Court has fashioned a new and profoundly inegalitarian redefinition of American democracy"--

The Three Emperors by Miranda Carter is the juicy, funny story of the three dysfunctional rulers of Germany, Russia and Great Britain at the turn of the last century, combined with a study of the larger forces around them. Three cousins. Three Emperors. And the road to ruin. As cousins, George V, Kaiser Wilhelm II and the last Tsar Nicholas II should have been friends - but they happened also to rule Europe's three most powerful states. This potent combination together with their own destructive personalities - petty, insecure, bullying, absurdly obsessive (stamp collecting, uniforms) - led not only to their own dramatic fallouts and falls from grace, but also to the outbreak of the First World War. Miranda Carter's riveting account of how three men who should have known better helped bring down an entire world is a gripping story of abdication, betrayal and murder. 'Fascinating. A wonderfully fresh and beautifully choreographed work of history' Mail on Sunday 'Miranda Carter's story is full of vivid quotations...a romp though the palaces of Europe in their last decades before Armageddon' Sunday Times 'Fascinating. Carter is a gifted storyteller and has written a very readable account' Independent 'That these three absurd men could ever have held the fate of Europe in their hands is a fact as hilarious as it is terrifying. I haven't enjoyed a historical biography this much since Lytton Strachey's Victoria' Zadie Smith Miranda Carter's first book, Anthony Blunt: His Lives, won the Royal Society of Literature Award and the Orwell Prize and was shortlisted for the Whitbread Biography Prize, the Guardian First Book Award, the Duff Cooper Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. The book was named as one of the New York Times Book Review's seven best books of 2002. Miranda lives in London with her husband and two sons.

From its beginnings in eighteenth-century London, this is the history of the largest urban police departments in the United States and a social portrait of America during the first century of its existence. From the birth of the New York City Police Department in 1845 to the end of World War II, each city had its share of crime, murders, vice, drug dealers, and addicts. Boston, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles each had their own history and developed in different ways according to local realities. But in every case, each police department had to deal with its share of good and bad cops, Pinkertons, gangsters, revolutionists, politicians, reporters, muckrakers, arsonists, murderers, district attorneys, strikers, labor spies, hanging judges, and axe-swinging crusaders, as well as every conceivable element of American society high and low. But American Police also offers a view of the FBI and its legendary director, J. Edgar Hoover; District Attorney Earl Warren and police commissioners such as Teddy Roosevelt, Stephen J. O'Meara, Richard Enright, Grover Whalen, Louis J. Valentine, and August Vollmer; and tough cops like Captain William "Clubber" Williams, Johnny "the Boff" Broderick, and John Cordes. It is also the history of crime over the course of a century that transformed the United States from a former colony of the British Empire to a powerful and restless nation poised for spectacular growth. Thomas A. Reppetto, a former commander of detectives, is the author of NYPD and American Mafia.

Every holiday has two parts: its historical background and its laws. This unique new offering from Shmuel Blitz - especially for children - presents both. He begins by telling us the story. We'll learn the history of the Exodus from Egypt; the heroism of the Maccabees, Chana and her seven sons; and Yehudis; the story of Rabbi Akiva and his rise from unlearned shepherd to the great sage of our people. So it is with every one of our festivals. And then - once we know the story - we learn the laws. Everything is presented simply, accurately, and clearly, in the famous Shmuel Blitz manner. With Tova Katz's beautiful illustrations, it's a treasure house of fun-filled learning. Read it to your little ones. Before long they'll know it by heart and read it to you. Bring a sparkle to your holidays with this hit from a master storyteller.
