Author Steve Sharp tells his students that the thesis statement is the sun around which EVERYTHING in their paper orbits. Every sentence must fall within its gravitational pull and obey rational orbital laws. Otherwise chaos ensues. If you really want to succeed in the academic world, you simply can't afford to leave your readers scratching their heads after they've read your paper, wondering, "What's the point of this? Why was this written?" MASTERING THE THESIS STATEMENT teaches you just about everything you need to know to write an effective thesis statement and improve the quality of your academic writing. Because writing is such hard work, you may have to revise your thesis many, many times before you discover the gem that shines brightest - a thesis that not only suits the content and purpose of your paper but also truly reflects what you're trying to say.

Academic Writing is a unique introduction to the subject. As the author puts it in her preface, "this book develops from a strong claim: namely, that style is meaningful." In developing that theme, the author draws meaningfully on theory, especially genre theory, while remaining grounded in the particular. Giltrow presents and discusses examples of actual academic writing of the sort that students must learn to deal with daily, and to write themselves. As newcomers to the scholarly community, students can find that community's ways of reading and writing mysterious, unpredictable and intimidating. Academic Writing demystifies the scholarly genres, shedding light on their discursive conventions and on academic readers' expectations and values. Throughout, Academic Writing respects the student writer; it engages the reader's interest without ever condescending, and it avoids the arbitrary and the dogmatic. The book also offers abundant exercises to help the student develop techniques for working productively at each stage of the scholarly writing process; mastering and summarizing difficult scholarly sources; planning; and revising to create good working conditions for the reader. The third edition of Giltrow's extremely successful book incorporates extensive revisions that integrate the theoretical perspectives of genre theory into the whole of the book in a more organic fashion; the changes are designed to make the book both more attuned to scholarly practice and more accessible to the undergraduate student. Giltrow's Academic Reading is designed as an accompanying reader for Academic Writing.

“If any man wish to write in a clear style, let him frst be clear in his thoughts. ” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe You may ask why anyone would want to write yet another book about scientifc writing. Tere are many books on the subject, some more useful than others, and the abundance of literature on this topic may confuse rather than guide. I felt that this book was necessary for several reasons. During the past years, I have learnt much about the needs of scientifc communicators, both through my personal experience as a pharmacologist and, later, through teaching scientifc writing at universities, pharmaceutical companies, and other institutions. In today’s busy world, guidance on scientifc writing must be focused and to the point. Our constraints no longer permit the ti- consuming search for the “correct” word or formulation. Moreover, the speed by which we produce a manuscript has become increasingly important, be it in academia or the pharmaceutical industry. Scientists ofen fnd it difcult to accept that their professional success essentially depends on their skill and efciency to communicate their research results. Without any doubt, the rapid exchange of pertinent information is critical to scientifc advancement and should therefore be regarded with due respect. A second, perhaps even more important reason for writing this book is my personal concern for everyone challenged to write high-quality texts in a language that is not his or her native tongue.
