It was while growing up as a child in India that astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan felt the need to locate herself in the world. Her love affair with scientific discovery and exploration started when she wrote the code to generate the monthly sky map over Delhi for a national newspaper. Mapping the Heavens provides a tour of the greatest hits of cosmological discovery. The cosmos, once understood to be alone and small, filled with the ordinary, is now a universe that is expanding at an accelerating pace, structured by dark matter and propelled by dark energy. Natarajan is currently involved in one of the largest and most innovative mapping exercises of the universe ever undertaken-the Hubble Fields Initiative.

Throughout history people have sought ways in which to 'map' the heavens. From the sources of mathematics and mythology sprang the classic star chart, the finest examples of which are at once scientific document and minor art form. In this illustrated work, Peter Whitfield reveals some of the ways in which the structure of the universe has been conceived, explained and depicted. With examples ranging from the Stone Age to the Space Age - ancient observatories, the angelic visions of Dante, images from the Copernican revolution, the rationalized heavens of Newton and Flamsteed, to modern deep space technology - he offers a challenging exploration of the tension between rigorous scientific knowledge and the contiuing search for cause, certainty and harmony in the universe.

This talk will provide an overview of recent and on-going sky surveys, focusing on their implications for cosmology. I will place particular emphasis on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the most ambitious mapping of the Universe yet undertaken, showing a virtual fly-through of the survey that reveals the large-scale structure of the galaxy distribution. Recent measurements of this large-scale structure, in combination with observations of the cosmic microwave background, have provided independent evidence for a Universe dominated by dark matter and dark energy as well as insights into how galaxies and larger-scale structures formed. Future planned surveys will build on these foundations to probe the history of the cosmic expansion--and thereby the dark energy--with greater precision.

This talk will provide an overview of results from the on-going Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the most ambitious mapping of the Universe yet undertaken, focusing on those with implications for cosmology. It will include a virtual fly-through of the survey that reveals the 3-dimensional large-scale structure of the galaxy distribution. Recent measurements of this large-scale structure, in combination with observations of the cosmic microwave background, have provided independent evidence for a Universe dominated by dark matter and dark energy as well as insights into how galaxies and larger-scale structures formed. I will also describe early results from the SDSS Supernova Survey, which aims to provide more precise constraints on the nature of dark energy. Future planned surveys from the ground and from space will build on these foundations to probe the history of the cosmic expansion--and thereby the dark energy--with even greater precision.

When Dr Eben Alexander wrote about his own startling near-death experience in Proof of Heaven, he was contacted by countless people from all walks of life. His story had touched them personally and they in turn had their own miraculous experiences of the afterlife to share with Eben. In The Map of Heaven, Eben recounts the astonishing stories he has heard on his travels, from near-death experiences and encounters with angelic beings to inspiring messages from departed loved ones. Each account helps us to understand just how vast the universe really is. Drawing on these accounts and lessons from religious leaders, philosophers and scientific investigations into the role of consciousness, Eben explores our true place in the universe and what exactly exists beyond death.
