OUTSIDE a gilt-lettered door on the seventeenth floor of a New York office building, a tall young man in a fur-lined coat stood shivering. Why did he shiver in that coat? He shivered because he was fussed, poor chap. Because he was rattled, from the soles of his custom-made boots to the apex of his Piccadilly hat. A painful, palpitating spectacle, he stood. Meanwhile, on the other side of the door, the business of the American branch of that famous marine insurance firm, Lloyds, of London—usually termed in magazine articles "The Greatest Gambling Institution in the World"—went on oblivious to the shiverer who approached. The shiverer, with a nervous movement, shifted his walking-stick to his left hand, and laid his right on the door-knob. Though he was not at his best, let us take a look at him. Tall, as has been noted, perfectly garbed after London taste, mild and blue as to eye, blond as to hair. A handsome, if somewhat weak face. Very distinguished—even aristocratic—in appearance Perhaps—the thrill for us democrats here of the nobility. And at this moment sadly need of a generous dose of that courage that abounds—see any book of familiar quotations—on the playing fields of Eton. Utterly destitute of the Eton or any of any brand, he pushed open the door. The click two dozen American typewriters smote upon hearing. An office boy of the dominant New York race demanded in loud indiscreet tones business there.

This is a true memoir about life's second chances, survival after losing a mate, and finding love the second time. Jim and Connie Morris are successful, socially active and popular. They are two of the top amateur golfers in Missouri and California. They and their children live celebrated lives, but then tragedy comes; softly at first, but then it crescendos: Their son James is stricken with MS, then Connie dies, followed by Jim's mother, and Payne Stewart, to whom Jim is a surrogate father. Jim hovers on the brink of despair. Elsewhere in America Lorna Kanehl is also suffering a loss. She is the former wife of popular Springfield, Missouri baseball great Rod Kanehl, the first New York Met ever to hit a grand slam out of the Polo Grounds. Her world is shattered by a heartbreaking divorce that tears her from the stepchildren she has grown to love. Lorna is buoyed by her faith, and her belief in tomorrow. In time she finds new meaning to life, but she vows to never remarry. Destiny brings these two fractured hearts together giving meaning to Tony Bennett's love song: love truly is wonderful the second time around. Their story is complete with celebrity photographs and filled with never before told celebrity stories from their bittersweet world.

In 1991, when my father was 81, the nature of our relationship changed in ways I wasn't prepared for. His doctor diagnosed an advanced case of arteriosclerosis. (We wondered if it was Alzheimer's disease.) Over four years, my father progressively lost his memory. Our roles reversed as daughter became parent, parent became child. My father lived with my husband and I, our adult son and teenage daughter until one month before he died. During this time, minor health problems become harder to treat when the patient doesn't remember. Hearing aids lead a life of their own. An eye operation becomes a maddening experience. Spirituality is a recurrent theme. I share my reliance on help from above, and my regular, informal talks with God. My Catholic father attended a Jewish Day Care Center when it wasn't safe for him to stay home alone. Our story could be anyone's story, only change the names, dates, and places. After hearing about my day, a friend confided, "As bad as my day was, yours is always worse." After reading our story, I hope you will say the same.

In a world of hatred, cruelty, selfishness, and disregard for the dignity and rights of others, what better quality could we desire than "love"? Love is thought of in our society in many varied ways. There is sensual love, superficial love, conditional love, and love that seeks its own self-satisfaction. Then there is God's type of love-love that is pure, holy, and devoted to the needs of others. That is what "Ultimate Love" is all about. There is no love greater than the love that the Lord planned for His people when He created a world of such beauty and grandeur.
