National pie champion, mom, homemaker, and self-proclaimed redneck, Francine Bryson won the hearts of bakers everywhere when she appeared on CBS’s The American Baking Competition and went on to become a finalist on the show. Known for her down-home Southern charm and sass (and for successfully pairing chocolate and peanut butter with bacon), Francine now shares her sought-after recipes and tips in her very first baking book. “Here are the recipes and tricks I was taught by my Great-Granny, Granny, Nana, and Mama—the women who schooled me on the ways a Southern woman keeps a kitchen—and that I learned from twenty-plus years of competing on the baking circuit. Now you can bake up award-winning pies such as Upside-Down Apple Pie, fluffy Biscuits Like Nana Made, and irresistible treats like Soda Pop Cake and Classic Southern Lemon Bars—all so good they have made the rounds with the ladies at church, the bridge clubs, supper clubs, and mom groups for generations.” --from the Introduction

In this romp through the changing landscape of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American toys, games, hobbies, and amusements, senior historian of technology Carroll Pursell poses a simple but interesting question: What can we learn by studying the relationship between technology and play? From Playgrounds to PlayStation explores how play reflects and drives the evolution of American culture. Pursell engagingly examines the ways in which technology affects play and play shapes people. The objects that children (and adults) play with and play on, along with their games and the hobbies they pursue, can reinforce but also challenge gender roles and cultural norms. Inventors—who often talk about "playing" at their work, as if motivated by the pure fun of invention—have used new materials and technologies to reshape sports and gameplay, sometimes even crafting new, extreme forms of recreation, but always responding to popular demand. Drawing from a range of sources, including scholarly monographs, patent records, newspapers, and popular and technical journals, the book covers numerous modes and sites of play. Pursell touches on the safety-conscious playground reform movement, the dazzling mechanical innovations that gave rise to commercial amusement parks, and the media's colorful promotion of toys, pastimes, and sporting events. Along the way, he shows readers how technology enables the forms, equipment, and devices of play to evolve constantly, both reflecting consumer choices and driving innovators and manufacturers to promote toys that involve entirely new kinds of play—from LEGOs and skateboards to beading kits and videogames.

Growing up in the midwest, there were many times when our meals consisted of what wild game my pa brought home and ground beef. Which meant my mom had to become creative in preparing our meals. After all Ground beef can get pretty boring and we had be to careful with our budget. Much like many of us are doing again. This collection of recipes, partially come from my childhood and part from having to get creative in order to get my son to eat. All the recipes are quick, easy and most are inexpensive to make but they all look and taste like a million dollars. There are things listed in my book that are included to make life a little easier. My son is disabled and when he was younger, I needed simple and easy. These non traditional recipes are for pampering and some are just suggestions to help save money around the house. One example is to take a piece of fruit cut it into sections and serve it with dinner. This adds color to the plate making it more appealing to the eye and is giving our bodies nutrition as well as it helps make a bag of fruit last a little longer. Like said it is not that I have reinvented the wheel, I just have some ideas that help keep my budget under control and ensure that my family ends up with full tummies, a clean house and yes a little pampering.

If you can slice an onion, you can cook almost anything. That's the first premise of this book. There are dozens more, all underlining the happy thought that cooking is easier than they tell you it is. The recipes and tips here--and there are many--are simple: it's flavor that counts, not a list of ingredients longer than a kitchen cabinet can bear. The methods are uncomplicated (mix vegetables and olive oil right in the roasting pan; why bother with a bowl?). Kitchen mythology, we learn, is one thing, and food history another. Mythology: the need for expensive slot-top box holders for knives. History: Did you ever wonder who Granny Smith was? How to Slice an Onion demystifies the culinary arts, making cooking simple for the beginner and opening new possibilities for the experienced cook. It's a kitchen companion, a friend at hand when you stand at the stove, a fascinating and amusing look at the history of the food we eat, and a charming guide to the fundamentals and finer details of good home cooking. For the beginner, the accomplished chef, and even for those who just like to read about food, this book is a good friend to have in the kitchen.

This comprehensive treatment of fluorescent lamp phosphors is the first published description of methods for their manufacture. It discusses the various factors controlling the selection of specific phosphors for use in lamps, and is unique in its systematic application of group theory to the problem of explaining the excitation and emission spectra in terms of crystal structure of the host material and the energy levels of the added foreign ions which are the so-called activators responsible for fluorescence. Unusual topics from various specialized fields are included since phosphor science requires a knowledge of several branches of physics, chemistry, and crystallography as well as some aspects of ceramic technology. The basic principles of the theory of atomic spectra, group theory, and the use of character tables for the thirty-two crystallographic point groups are included for convenient reference. The appendix contains essential tables for dealing with the spectra of ions in crystals.

Unity brings you ever closer to the "author once, deploy anywhere" dream. With its multiplatform capabilities, you can target desktop, web, mobile devices, and consoles using a single development engine. Little wonder that Unity has quickly become the #1 game engine out there. Mastering Unity is absolutely essential in an increasingly competitive games market where agility is expected, yet until now practical tutorials were nearly impossible to find. Creating Games with Unity and Maya gives you with an end-to-end solution for Unity game development with Maya. Written by a twelve-year veteran of the 3D animation and games industry and professor of 3D animation, this book takes you step-by-step through the process of developing an entire game from scratch-including coding, art, production, and deployment. This accessible guide provides a "non-programmer" entry point to the world of game creation. Aspiring developers with little or no coding experience will learn character development in Maya, scripts, GUI interface, and first- and third-person interactions.
