A leading critic of contemporary Spanish poetry examines here the work of ten important poets who came to maturity in the immediate post-Civil War period and whose major works appeared between 1956 and 1971: Francisco Brines; Eladio Cabañero; Angel Crespo; Gloria Fuertes; Jaime Gil de Biedma; Angel González; Manuel Mantero; Claudio Rodríguez; Carlos Sahagún; and José Angel Valente. Although each of these poets has developed an individual style, their work has certain common characteristics: use of the everyday language and images of contemporary Spain, development of language codes and intertextual references, and, most strikingly, metaphoric transformations and surprising reversals of the reader's expectations. Through such means these poets clearly invite their readers to join them in journeys of poetic discovery. Andrew P. Debicki's is the first detailed stylistic analysis of this generation of poets, and the first to approach their work through the particularly appropriate methods developed in "reader-response" criticism.

Rediscovering the Language of the Tribe in Modern Venezulan Poetry

This study examines the work of two revolutionary modern poet groups, Trafico and Guaire. The poets of these groups, heady with the success of one of Latin America's oldest democracies, and reared in the optimistic climate of the petroleum boom, felt sure of their ability to defy their poetic predessors be revitalising poetry with a populist infusion of everyday images and colloquial language. Using a cultural studies approach, this work examines the historical and cultural context of the poetic revolution they achieved, and discusses specific texts by many of the members, including Armando Rojas Guardia, Yolanda Pantin, Rafael Castill Zapata, Igor Barreto, Miguel Marquez and Rafael Arraiz Lucca. Textual analysis and consideration of cultural influences show how the main temes of the poets' work: everyday life, alienation, love and self-reflective metapoetry reflect the specific modern, urban enviroment of Caracas in the early 1980s.

Streams of Silver fills an absence in the study of the works by women writers from Argentina, notwithstanding a rich tradition going back to the birth of Argentina as an independent nation. The purpose of this volume is to provide an in-depth analysis of the fiction by selected, representative contemporary women writers: Alicia Jurado, Elvira Orphee, Alina Diaconu, Alicia Steimberg, Cecilia Absatz, and Reina Roffe. These writers represent a spectrum, from established writers of the generation of 1955 to younger writers who started publishing in the mid-seventies. An introductory essay places the writers within the established Argentine literary tradition, followed by short biographical sketches acquainting the reader with each individual writer. The interpretive essays discuss the writers' main works, themes, and literary techniques. They also include materials from scholarly studies of their work, as well as excerpts from reviews published in Argentine newspapers and journals. Interviews with each of the writers, conducted by the author, draw out their life experiences and the motivating forces and influences behind their work. They also shed a personal light on some of the issues discussed in the essays, such as how Argentine political events such as Peronism (1946-35, 1973-76) and the Proceso (1976-83) and their censorship affected their lives and writing, on feminism and its impact on them and their work, and on their contributions to contemporary Latin American women's writing.
