Land and Economy in Ancient Palestine is a study of the economic crises throughout the Second Temple Period. It establishes that the single factor of the economy which united all aspects of life in ancient society was land. Through study of a wide variety of sources, including the New Testament and classical authors, Jack Pastor looks at who owned land, and how they came to possess it. He examines the various ramifications of landownership in ancient society to ascertain its effect on livelihoods, government policies and revenues. A special emphasis is placed on debt and famine as social and economic problems with ties to the landholding structure.

"A Land Flowing with Milk and Honey" examines how the promised land of Israel has been seen and interpreted differently over the course of Jewish history by those who call it home and by the many other individuals and cultures it has affected. The first glimpse of the promised land was God's description to Moses of "a land flowing with milk and honey." Since that time, the land has been more than a geographical or political entity. Visions of Israel have proliferated—uniting, dividing, and inspiring individuals and societies for thousands of years. The fourteen contributors to this volume draw upon a variety of scholarly disciplines to consider how and why Israel has been interpreted in so many different ways. Topics include the transplanting of the idea of Zion to a sacred mountain in New Zealand; the roles of archaeology and cartography in shaping perceptions of Israel; the understanding of classical Islamic followers; the multiple meanings of "milk and honey"; the vision of noted engraver and photographer E. M. Lilien; how the land inspired two German-born Jewish women poets; the current meaning of Israel to its political right; the distinct visions of Israeli sculptors and of artist Hermann Struck; images of Israel that appear in Egyptian films; the perceptions of first-time American Jewish tourists to Israel; old stereographic photo tours of the land; and the perspectives of British millenarian missionaries in nineteenth-century Palestine.

Palestinian history differs markedly from that of other parts of the world, causing many to treat it as a thing apart, with its own special logic requiring its own mode of analysis; contributors to this anthology, however, “believe that Palestinian structures and processes can be analyzed satisfactorily with the help of concepts and methods used in the social sciences while, at the same time, giving due weight to their specific features,” according to Roger Owen, editor. The book consists of four studies of economic and social history plus an introduction by Roger Owen. Other authors and articles are Alexander Schöch, “European Penetration and the Economic Development of Palestine, 1856–1882”; Sarah Graham-Brown, “The Political Economy of the Jabal Nablus 1929–1948”; Salim Tamari, “Factionalism and Class Formation in Recent Palestinian History”; and Avi Plascov, “Jordan’s Border Inhabitants: The Forsaken Palestinians?”
