Evelyn Picon Garfield has chosen selections from the prose works of twelve female authors representing seven Latin American countries to create a collection which speaks to a variety of issues and exhibits a pastiche of richly varied artistic styles. Containing short stories, a one-act play, and excerpts from novels, the volume touches on such topics as political commitment and persecution, regional ethnicity of African and Indian cultures, social issues between classes and races, misogyny, the complexities of the human psyche, and female solidarity. Garfield includes works from the six authors she interviewed for her Women's Voices from Latin America, and has added selections from six other writers including Isabel Allende and Clarice Lispector.

In Storyscapes we listen carefully to what South African writers reveal about themselves and their relations to South African space since the democratic transition of 1994. One main focus is the power of stories to uncover contradictory processes and investments of identity and to point readers toward a more meaningful life. Another main focus is the complexities of the post-colonial understanding of South African land, landscape, and space. Space in relation to race, class, and gender identity figures prominently in analyses and comparisons of diverse South African texts, such as Breyten Breytenbach's Dog Heart, André Brink's Imaginings of Sand, as well as the important South African subgenre of the farm novel. Questions of black or hybrid identity are highlighted by confronting older texts with new ones by black and women writers such as A.H.M. Scholtz and E.K.M. Dido. These texts - and a number of Afrikaans texts that are less well-known in the English-speaking world - are set in the wider frameworks of postcolonial criticism and global issues of cultural identity.

Isabel Allende—“la Famosa” to her fellow Chileans—is the world’s most widely read Spanish language author. Her career coincides with the emergence of multiculturalism and global feminism, and her powerfully honest, revelatory works touch the pulse points of humankind. Her bravura study of the interwoven roles of women in family history opens the minds of outsiders to the sufferings of women and their children during years of social and political nightmare. This reference work provides an introduction to Allende’s life as well as a guided overview of her body of work. Designed for the fan and scholar alike, this text features an alphabetized, fully-annotated listing of major terms in the Allende canon, including fictional characters, motifs, historical events and themes. A comprehensive index is included.

Furthermore, she argues that this contest has been enacted literally and figuratively on the stage of human bodies as sites of domination and resistance. Examining works by Pia Barros, David Benavente and the Taller de Investigacion Teatral, Ariel Dorfman, Diamela Eltit, and Isabel Allende, Political Bodies engages emergent feminist critiques of authoritarianism in terms of gender and class, history and language.
