Excerpt from Johnson's New Universal Cyclopedia, Vol. 3: A Scientific and Popular Treasury of Useful Knowledge; Illustrated With Maps, Plans, and Engravings; Lichfield-R (Testimonials on Last Pages of the First Volume) Without such liberality, indeed, the execution of the work would have been im possible. In order to secure the co-operation Of the more than five hundred eminent writers who have contributed articles upon subjects in which their special studies and investigations have made them authorities, an expenditure has been required which is without any precedent in the history of such publications. The Publishers, however, have never doubted that whatever outlay should be found to add to the intrinsic value of the work would be amply compensated by the increased demand for it on the part of an appreciative public; and the subscriptions hitherto taken, over when only two of the four volumes were published, have fully justified this belief. "Since Europeans first began colonizing the New World, in many cases making the trip for religious freedom, religion has been an integral part of American life--and with religion, there are always differences of opinion and controversy. How have religious controversies developed in the United States, and what effects have they had on American history and society? Surveying key aspects of the controversial issues, persons, and religious groups of today, Encyclopedia of Religious Controversies in the United States, Second Edition is a thorough update and expansion of the first edition of this book. This two-volume work contains many new entries that reflect current 21st-century religious controversies. Written by a variety of scholars with varying specializations, the content covers major people, ideas, terms, institutions, groups, books, and events. The A-Z format allows for easy location of materials, a chronology of developments and events enables readers to trace the development of contentious topics over time, and a section of primary document excerpts give readers further perspective on the issues."--Page of covers.

This book traces the early history of the first English folksong revival during the late Victorian era, focusing on the work of three prominent song collectors, Sabine Baring-Gould, Frank Kidson and Lucy Broadwood. It follows E. David Gregory's earlier book, Victorian Songhunters, continuing the story of English folksong collecting from when that book left off, and is copiously illustrated with examples of the folksongs collected during these years.
