Reading without meditation is sterile; meditation without reading is liable to error; prayer without meditation is lukewarm; meditation without prayer is unfruitful; prayer, when it is fervent, wins contemplation, but to obtain contemplation without prayer would be rare, even miraculous. Bernhard de Clairvaux (12th century) NobodycandenythatIP-basedtra?chasinvadedourdailylifeinmanyways and no one can escape from its di?erent forms of appearance. However, most people are not aware of this fact. From the usage of mobile phones – either as simple telephone or for data transmissions – over the new form of telephone service Voice over IP (VoIP), up to the widely used Internet at the users own PC, in all instances the transmission of the information, encoded in a digital form, relies on the Internet Protocol (IP). So, we should take a brief glimpse at this protocol and its constant companions such as TCP and UDP, which have revolutionized the communication system over the past 20 years. The communication network has experienced a fundamental change, which was dominated up to end of the eighties of the last century by voice appli- tion.Butfromthemiddleoftheninetieswehaveobservedadecisivemigration in the data transmission. If the devoted reader of this monograph reads the title ‘IP tra?c theory and performance’, she/he may ask, why do we have to be concerned with mod- ing IP tra?c, and why do we have to consider and get to know new concepts.

Introduction to IP and ATM Design and Performance

Introduction to IP and ATM Design and Performance

Traffic intensity is a dimensionless quantity . It is given the ' honorary ' dimension
of erlangs in memory of Anders K . Erlang , the founder of traffic theory : one
erlang of traffic is written as 1 E . Let ' s put some numbers in the formulas .

Many engineers and students experience difficulty in making sense of issues associated with IP and ATM teletraffic techniques. This is partly because of the subject itself: networks are flexible, complicated, and still evolving. However, some of the difficulties arise because of the advanced mathematical methods that have been applied to provide analytic tools. The research literature abounds with many and varied analytical approaches applied to a bewildering array of traffic mixes, switch designs and traffic control mechanisms. Introduction to IP and ATM Design and Performance provides: an introduction to IP and ATM traffic issues; performance evaluation using analysis and simulation; presentation of key formulas describing traffic and queueing behaviour and practical examples, graphs and tables for the design of wide area networks. Particular areas addressed include the fundamental traffic control functions: connection admission control; usage parameter control; priority control; queue scheduling and buffer management. Features include: ï¿1⁄2 Clear Expansion of typical traffic and queueing behaviour ï¿1⁄2 Simple exposition of fundamental performance evaluation methods and techniques for ATM and IP ï¿1⁄2 All formulas are available in MathCAD files on the related web-site ï¿1⁄2 Avoids the use of advanced mathematical methods This simple intuitive approach is easy to follow and will benefit both engineers in the telecommunications industry and undergraduate and postgraduate students in telecommunications, communications engineering, computer engineering courses.

This book presents a state-of-the-art survey of technologies, algorithms, models, and experiments in the area quality of Internetnbsp;service. It is based on the European Action COST 263 Quality of Future Internet Services, which involved 70 researchers during a period of almost five years. The results presented in the book reflect the state of the art in the area beyond the Action COST 263.The six comprehensive chapters are written by teams of leading researchers in the area; a roadmap outlines and summarizes the overall situation and indicates future developments. The book offers chapters on traffic managements, quality of service routing, Internet traffic engineering, mobile networking, algorithms for scalable content distribution, and pricing and QoS.
