From the National Book Award-winning author of Slaves in the Family, a riveting true life/true crime narrative of the partnership between the murderer who invented the movies and the robber baron who built the railroads. One hundred and thirty years ago Eadweard Muybridge invented stop-motion photography, anticipating and making possible motion pictures. He was the first to capture time and play it back for an audience, giving birth to visual media and screen entertainments of all kinds. Yet the artist and inventor Muybridge was also a murderer who killed coolly and meticulously, and his trial is one of the early instances of a media sensation. His patron was railroad tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, whose particular obsession was whether four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground at once. Stanford hired Muybridge and his camera to answer that question. And between them, the murderer and the railroad mogul launched the age of visual media. Set in California during its frontier decades, The Tycoon and the Inventor interweaves Muybridge's quest to unlock the secrets of motion through photography, an obsessive murder plot, and the peculiar partnership of an eccentric inventor and a driven entrepreneur. A tale from the great American West, this popular history unspools a story of passion, wealth, and sinister ingenuity.

The 21st century will be the age of the city. Already over 50% of the world population live in urban centres and over the coming decades this percentage will increase. Blending anecdote, fact and first hand encounters - from exploring the slums of Mumbai, to visiting roof-top farms in Brooklyn and attending secret dinner parties in Paris, to riding the bus in Latin America - Leo Hollis reveals that we have misunderstood how cities work for too long. Upending long-held assumptions and challenging accepted wisdom, he explores: why cities can never be rational, organised places; how we can walk in a crowd without bumping into people, and if we can design places that make people want to kiss; whether we have the right solution to the problem of the slums; how ants, slime mould and traffic jams can make us rethink congestion. And above all, the unexpected reasons why living in the city can make us fitter, richer, smarter, greener, more creative - and, perhaps, even happier. Cities Are Good for You introduces dreamers, planners, revolutionaries, writers, scientists, architects, slum-dwellers and emperors. It is shaped by the idea that cities are the greatest social experiment in human history, built for people, and by the people.

Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ... SECTION L (i) ESSAYS AND PROPOSALS SUBMITTED PRIOR TO 1840. Charles Whiting. The late Mr. Charles Whiting, the eminent printer of Beaufort House, in the Savoy, Strand, London, was one of the first who made proposals to the Post-office authorities to reduce the rates for the conveyance of printed matter, and for that purpose to employ stamped envelopes, or " Go Frees." These were proposed by him as an experiment, which, if successful, were to be followed by applying them to written matter. Mr. Whiting married the widow of Sir William Congreve, the inventor of the original machines used at Somerset House for embossing in colour. Sir William Congreve was also the patentee of a process of compound plate printing, whereby impressions were struck off in two or more colours at a single operation of the press, which was effected by two or more plates fitting into each other with great exactness, so as to form one complete design. Compound printing was extensively known from the circumstance of its being employed in printing the Government labels used for denoting the duties on patent medicines. For some years these labels had been printed in two colours, the second These must not be confounded with a trial obliterating circular stamp in black, with 00 Free across the face, and Post Office round the outer edge, on a plain engine-turned groundwork resembling an ordinary office seal, the whole being enclosed in an outer circle of dots. A century ago, the automobile industry stood poised to reshape the American landscape. The Legend of Federal-Mogul recounts this compelling period in industrial history through the story of Federal-Mogul, one of the world's largest manufacturers of automobile components. Under the leadership of founders H. Gray Muzzy and Edward Lyon, the company began by supplying bearings to the first automobile companies, but quickly diversified into engine seals, lighting systems and braking components. Today, led by Chairman and CEO Dick Snell, with sales of almost $7 billion, the company has stayed true to its roots while emerging as a global systems supplier that works in close partnership with major automakers.
