In this visit to Don Everts's head, you'll meet The Dirty Beggar. He's hunched over, with bloodshot eyes and dressed in a dark, baggy robe. He's usually silent, sulking in a corner, but sometimes, late at night, he whispers in a hoarse, raspy voice. And nobody wants to hear the stories he tells, stories of evil and wrath and judgment. Relax--Stuff Happens thinks that the Beggar is bent out of shape over nothing. Middle Class Spirituality can't bear the Beggar's intolerance. And Truth Is Relative dismisses the Beggar's absolutism. But regardless of what they think, the other ideas can't escape being confronted by the Beggar. The Dirty Beggar is one of the most unpleasant, uncomfortable folks ever to visit your head. But he sticks around and haunts you. Find out why.

Mathilde Monaque developed severe depression when she was just 14. The eldest in a family of six and an exceptionally bright and gifted little girl, the discovery shook her family to the core. Trouble in My Head is Mathilde's tender and illuminating account of her struggle to surface from a disease that could have taken her life. With remarkable sensitivity and lucidity she describes her experience of depression, her days in the teenage hospital and her battle to conquer the disease. Mathilde's perspective as a sufferer of teenage depression is unique. Unlike adult depression which involves feelings of guilt, Mathilde describes teenage depression as a breaking down of certainties, the fear of being oneself, the fear of not loving and of not being loved. Adults and teenagers alike will find inspiration and insight in her touching and remarkable account.

In this visit to Don's head, you'll meet The Old Man. This short, wrinkled fellow has been living here for a long time, and he has a story to tell about the big, black Bible clutched in his skinny arms. But some other ideas, like Youthful Cynicism, Source Criticism and Power Always Corrupts have some serious questions about whether The Old Man should stay or go. Why should anyone bother with The Old Man's story in these enlightened times? Can anyone really believe that he or anybody else has an actual Sentence from God? If you've been visited by The Church Is Bankrupt (And Has Hurt Me) or Perspective Is Everything, you might not be so sure about The Old Man's story. Then again, he's been around for a while. Go ahead, listen in on the conversation and pepper him with questions. He doesn't mind getting grilled.

Los Angeles, November 2009 My meeting with Claudia took place at her house in Beverly Hills just one month after I returned home to Los Angeles from my trip to Iran. It was Sunday in November, a crisp Sunday afternoon. The sun was getting gold over the ocean. The city was peaceful; the streets were quiet and the sidewalks empty. I took the main thoroughfare, Wilshire Boulevard, as I left Ocean Avenue. I felt a sense of victory and elation for not being caught in the traffic and the noise of the world. There is nothing more pleasant than driving on Sundays in Los Angeles; the city takes on an entirely different air. On weekend getaways, I would say I find myself totally in a mental exercise of freedom. As I looked around, I saw the sun come up red, red and dull. I thought it just looked like the yolk of a hard-boiled egg. Since my relationship with Claudia was strictly professional, I must admit I felt a bit strange about meeting her outside the context of our work as she had suggested. She had called me and asked me to visit her—“Come have a drink with me”—something she had not done more than two or three times since the day that she had hired me. Even though we both had the art world in common, we only knew each other through our work. Who could suppose that this meeting would lead me to the first, and perhaps biggest, achievement of my life?

For Tipperary hurling, defeat in the 2012 All-Ireland semi-final was heartbreaking. For Lar Corbett, it was devastating. Then again it has never been a straight road for the three-time All-star and 2010 ‘Player of the Year’. Deemed not good enough to play for Tipperary at minor level, he was nineteen before his unique talent was identified by Nicky English who gave Lar his chance in the All-Ireland winning squad of 2001. But this success was to be followed by years of despair as Tipperary hurling floundered, managers came and went, and a recurring hamstring condition left his career hanging in the balance. The turning point came in 2007 with the arrival of the ‘dream team’ of Liam Sheedy, Eamon O’Shea and Michael Ryan. Encouraged to play more freely and to exploit his explosive pace, Lar soon became one of the most lethal forwards in the game. His three-goal blitz against Kilkenny in the 2010 All Ireland final is the stuff of legend. Following defeat in the 2011 All-Ireland final, Lar stepped away from the game in February 2012 but was ultimately persuaded to return for the championship. Then came the disastrous semi-final where tactical changes kept Lar largely out of the game and provoked unprecedented criticism from media and fans alike. In All In My Head, Lar offers a unique insight into what happened on that day and over the turbulent year leading up to it. This honest and revealing autobiography is a must-read for all fans of the sport of hurling.

A bunch of ideas are running around in Don Everts's head. Some are permanent residents. Others are visitors, just passing through. When they all get together, some odd things start happening. It's one thing when the idea Girls Are Kind Of Icky gets challenged by Girls Can Be Pretty Darned Interesting. But it gets more complicated when The Old Man Clutching The Big Black Bible meets Higher Criticism. Or when You Are Not Loveable tries to drown out the voice of God Loves You. In this tour of Don's head, you get a glimpse of how we make sense of ideas and how we decide which ones should live with us. We're introduced to back-door ideas like Pain Is Bad, secret ideas like Lighter Skin Implies Higher Intelligence, and sexy ideas like Shiny Happy Globalization. How do we determine what ideas win out? Which ideas should get to stay, and who should get kicked out of the house?
