Chained to the Rock of Adversity offers valuable insight into the lives of the Old South's free women of color, using personal letters and a diary to tell an extraordinary story. The letters, from family members and friends, were written between 1844 and 1899 to Ann Battles Johnson, wife of prominent Natchez businessman William T. Johnson, and her daughter Anna, while Ann's daughter Catharine wrote the diary. A freed slave herself, Ann Johnson became the head of her family and a slaveholder before the Civil War. Her days were filled with the often tedious and sometimes overwhelming duties assigned to slaveholding women, but her race separated her from most other women of this class. The writings depict a tight-knit network of family and friends and show a family well aware of its precarious position in society, feared by most whites and resented by other blacks. Editor Virginia Meacham Gould provides an extensive introduction, a cast of characters, identifying notes, and a brief afterword tracing the Johnson family to the present day.

He's taken me from wondering if I'll die soon to looking forward to my life, and I'm falling for him fast and hard. There are just two problems. The second is that Damon is a man full of secrets. I can sense it. But what can they be? And how can I get him past them, so that I can have him in my arms?

Santosh a ten-year-old from a Mumbai slum with a passion for cricket, Bollywood, and Ganpati Baapa; Salim'a socialist trader from Birmingham and witness to the aftermath of the unjust war on terror; Ruth'a lesbian ship-welder from New Jersey whose fierce right-wing patriotism cost her the love of her life; Akechi'a rakish, self-obsessed manga star with a fondness for high living and beautiful gaijin women; and Yoshi Akechi's twin and fellow mangaka, a hermaphrodite consumed by a guilty secret about their Japanese father and Chinese mother. Can this wildly unlikely quintet succeed in their seemingly impossible mission of travelling to the end of time and space to bring peace to the world? Can they overcome their cultural, racial, religious and other differences and find a way to end the apocalyptic War of Wars that threatens not only humanity, but all creation, with ultimate destruction? Does humanity even deserve to be saved?

You already know the women you'll meet in this book. They may sit beside you in the pew . . . or join you at small group . . . or touch your heart from a speaker's podium. They have all been saved. They all love the Lord. And yet . . . One struggles with sucidal despair Another is involved with adultery, pornography, or a same-sex attraction Another endures regular beatings – or worse – by someone who claims to love her Another is divorced . . . or thinking about it This one drinks secretly or "doctor shops" for pain pills That one wrestles with depression or bipolar disorder And many others feel they can never be thin enough, beautiful enough, successful enough . . . or Christian enough to be loved or accepted They're all good Christian girls who have been broken by sin – their own and others. They all needed the honest, life-giving truth at the heart of this book. Do you? Tammy Maltby addresses issues that aren't discussed much in church circles – private sins that she and other women have battled.
